i'm having an issue with my cat as she has bit off her nails and now has  swelling between 2 paws and she is on gabapentin an anxetity medicine and have to keep on cone till it heals. Want to know if anyone has had an issue like this and would love to hear your story and how you dealt with it as it is so swollen and was fitted with a no bite collar she couldn't turn her head but she got at the paw and that was no good and put the cone back on and was just told to clean it with an antispectic they gave me and was told only to use shredded newspaper and the litter will burn and get in paw. Any help and suggestions would be great as she lost her hind leg as got caught in the garage overhead. Thanks all. 🙂

I'm so glad you decided to post here. How is she doing today?

What you are describing may or may not be related to phantom leg pain . It's hard to say what caused her to bite her nails in the first place, but generally when animals do that it's the result of untreated pain.

As I mentioned in the Triapwds Chat, it does sound like your vet is doing a great job managing the wound. It's so hard to be patient, but between the antibiotics., pain medications, anti-anxiety meds, and the cone, you should start to see some healing soon.

Did the vet mention using Manuka honey in addition to the antibiotics? Many members have reported excellent results.

No as he put her on amitriptyline 10mg 1Xday and said she will be on that for a while with he gabapentin if necessary .7mg 3 day as she is so miserable with that collar and when i watch tv i take it off to watch she doesnt go to that paw as i feel it is not phampton leg pain as i think she came off pain medicine too soon which caused her to bit her nails and is between two of her paws and every time i use the antispectic they gave me it seems to make it worse and more redder so only using it when she comes out of litter box and only using shredded paper and hope she doesn't do this again and also told it will help with the over grooming. A few weeks before the accident she did overgroom herself and had a bare tummy and that is way before i got the puppy. Can't be bringing her every week to vet as they charge me every time i come and so upset over this. Any help I can get would be so great and thank you for all your support as means so much to me...:)

OK so if she is not attacking her paw every time, then it does sound like the wound is healing, right? If so, that is GREAT news!

Also, the overgrooming incident...did that happen before amputation? If so, this problem started long before she lost her leg and the cause is likely unrelated. What do you think might have caused her to overgroom herself? Animals don't do that for no reason. Something triggered it. Find out what, and you may find out better ways to help her heal.

Also, if you are not following the antiseptic spray exactly as your veterinarian recommended, then you will delay healing. If you feel it is making the wound more irritated I would let them know. She may need a different medication.

I'm sorry this is happening to you both. It's not easy or inexpensive, we completely understand. But it's not forever. She WILL get better. Hang in there!

You are doing great in the Forums. Don't know why you have 8 messages in your inbox, have you tried clicking on them?

Hopefully you will get some positive news from the vet tomorrow! Keep us posted.

P.S. I see you went to the Tripawds Chat earlier but didn't say anything. I am in there now if you want to talk.

Hi, I'm so sorry you are going through this. Watching my cat in a cone was heartbreaking and so difficult. I can only imagine how hard this is for you.

I've heard good things about CBD for animals. My mom's vet told my mom to give CBD to her cat for pain and anxiety. Depending on your cat, there are varieties that are oils or I've gotten one that you rub into the ear. I don't know where you are located. Where I am, every local pet food store carries some.

I just realized you posted this two weeks ago, so I hope all is ok now and you're kitty is healing well.

Take care.

That is so nice of you to post! Last time we talked to Sweetie's mom, she said she was slowly improving. Here's a blog post about her (published before we talked to her last week):
