Hi All,

I have been lurking and reading everything possible here on Tripawds for the past 6 1/2 weeks while my darling Black Cat has recovered brilliantly from his right rear-leg amputation.  Everything has progressed smoothly... until the past couple of days, where he is grooming so much more than 'usual'.  Almost violently ~ nipping the skin as well as over-grooming.  There's fur everywhere, and a fair bit missing in one spot particularly.

I have been brushing him daily, rubbing and scratching the bits that are challenging for him to get to ~ and making that little stump go wild, lol.  I don't know what else to do to ease his itchiness, poor bub.  Part of it could be that it's winter here in New Zealand, so dry skin is possible.

Does anyone have any ideas on how I can give him some comfort? He's done so very well, wearing his cone for about 5 weeks.  I hate to put it back on him, and am hopeful there's something I haven't thought of that will make a difference.

Thank you!sp_hearticon2

Hmm...over grooming is one of the most common pain signals . I know it's been a few weeks since surgery but it could be he's experiencing pain if this is new behavior since surgery happened. This wouldn't be uncommon since amputation pain can last a while. Where is he licking and how often? Jot down the symptoms. I would let your vet know and see if putting him back on Gabapentin for nerve pain might help.

Thanks Jerry.

Came back from the vet this morning with some Gabapentin💎. So far the darling BC🐈‍⬛🐾 is eating and drinking well, and sitting in the sunshine☀️.

Grooming seems 'normalised' at present ~ he's a tad wobbly on the remaining back leg right now. Super sensitive to all meds, and this one's probably no different.

But... no excessive grooming showing up, thank goodness🙏

Thank you Jerry, I appreciate your support and advice. ✨

awww you are so welcome. Yeah, Gabapentin can cause wobbliness in some animals. Have you considered going to a physio/rehab therapist? Remember Tripawds can pay for your first rehab visit , and you can learn a lot about strengthening and keeping him fit.
