Hello! I have a 5-6 month old kitten who was the runt of the litter. Her name is Machi (which means fortunate child).
She had been missing for about four days before she showed yesterday.
She was limping and soaking wet. As I looked closer, it turns out she had broken her back leg, with bone penetrating the skin. My little trooper had crossed the creek that runs behind my house to make it home.
I took her to the vet this morning, and they broke the news that they had to amputate. She just got picked up from surgery around 5:00 and I just really need tips and advice on how to accommodate to being a tripawd momma.
My nerves are shot. Any tips and well wishes help!
thanks- Machi & Kynzie
Hi Machi and Kynzie, welcome. I'm sorry you had to join our club but so glad you found us during such a stressful time.
What kind of medication was prescribed to Maachi? She's a teeny thing but needs pain medication just as much as a full-sized adult cat. Many times cats are shortchanged in that department so I hope she's not one of them. A recovery is so much tougher without good pain management .
Have you seen our Tripawds Recovery Shopping List ? Or the e-book Cool Tips for Tripawd Cats ? Our What to Expect articles also have important pointers to help you out.
One of the most important things you can do is to make sure Macchi doesn't have full run of the house during recovery. I know that will be so hard but it's to help with healing. Can you create a safe recovery room where she can't get into any trouble, like sneaking under a bed or getting trapped in box springs? That will do a lot of good for her.
And also just remember that our attitude is super important too. As stressed as you are, it's important to stay pawsitve and confident so that Maachi can pick up on your feelings and follow your lead!

So glad you found us, but sorry for the circumstances.
Rene gave you great input and great links. Once you read thro those links, you will pretty much know everything you need to navigate through recovery and onto a happy, healthy tripawd kitty.
Right now you are in the hardest part of recovery. It does t last furever, but it seems like ot for about two weeks or so. As Jerry said, pain management is crucial. Drinking and peeing are important, but pooping and veing off food may be the norm for a few days. Mastering the litter box is sometimes a challenge at first.
Stay connected and let is know how we can help, okay? And again, check out the links, especially Cool Tips for Tripawd Cats .
