How old is Tripawd Rochee?
- 9 months old
When and Why did he lose a leg?
- He was a stray, barely 4 months old, and we believe he was struck by a car.
How did Rochee adapt to life on three?
- He has done wonderfully! Having three legs hasn’t stopped him from being a happy, playful, curious dog and enjoying life.
What are his favorite things to do?
- He loves to eat, to play with other dogs, to take walks, to chase balls, and to lounge in the backyard.
Is there any special gear that helps Rochee get around?
- He wears a Ruffwear Flagline Dog Harness mostly to help me have a good hold on him, if needed.
What did you think would happen after surgery? Did your worst fears happen? How did you cope?
- I am fostering Rochee. He was found abandoned with a broken front leg in New Iberia Parish (133 miles west of New Orleans, Louisiana). The New Iberia shelter reached out to Southern Animal Foundation in New Orleans for help.
- SAF brought him to New Orleans and after consulting with veterinary orthopedics it was determined that his leg could not be saved. On April 23 he underwent surgery to amputate his front left leg. SAF reached out to the public for help for a foster. I have had him since April.
- Fortunately, he had a swift and uneventful recovery from the surgery. It has been an adventure for me because I have never had a puppy (I have only had adult and senior dogs). Losing the leg hasn’t stopped him from being all puppy and getting into puppy shenanigans! Puppies are a lot of work! He goes to doggy daycare and loves playing with the other dogs. He knows basic commands and is taking puppy classes. He is very affectionate.
- Rochee is looking for his very own forever home. Anyone interested should contact SAF.
What is the biggest lesson you/ve learned from Rochee so far?
- That difficulties in life can’t stop your chutzpah! That amongst pain and chaos, we can find joie de vie.
What is your best advice to someone who is about to go through amputation with their pet, or someone who is thinking of adopting a Tripawd?
- I always tell those who are considering adopting to first acknowledge that they’re ready to love and that love comes with chaos and shenanigans but also lots of laughs. Tripawd dogs are the same as 4 legged dogs, except they walk cuter with their little hops!
