Tripawd Tuesday: Berkeley’s Bounce-Back Story

When a dog loses a leg to osteosarcoma, it doesn’t mean the end of the road. Today’s feature, Tripawd Tuesday: Berkeley’s Bounce Back Story, shows that life on three legs can be filled with more hope and joy than you ever imagined.

Therapy Dog Berkeley, Tripawd Tuesday Super Hero!

Berkeley Tripawd Therapy Dog
This therapy dog is still helping people!

Berkeley was rescued by his family in 2016. They could quickly see that this boy has a talent for making people feel better during tough times, and Berkeley became a certified therapy dog the next year. After seven years brightening people’s days, Berkeley lost a leg to bone cancer. But that didn’t stop him, as his dad Michael explains in today’s Tripawd Tuesday feature.

How old is your Tripawd?

  • 11

When and Why did your Tripawd lose a leg?

  • We discovered an osteosarcoma tumor on left front leg in October.

How did your Tripawd adapt to life on three?

  • He is amazing – jogs to the park with me. Goes up and down stairs really well. He can also still give paw to get a treat!

What are your Tripawd’s favorite things to do?

  • Lay in the family room with the family!

Is there anything special that helped or helps your Tripawd?

  • Patience, moving slower when needed. Letting him sniff more when outside.

If you went through amputation surgery recovery with your animal, what did you think would happen after surgery? Did your worst fears happen? How did you cope?

  • The surgery went better than expected. Though surprised at how swollen the surgery site was. Concerned he could not stay quiet for 2 weeks until sutures removed. However, he was able to do that. He is so adaptable!

What is the biggest lesson you learned from your Tripawd?

  • Patience and enjoying every day.

What is your best advice to someone who is about to go through amputation with their pet, or someone who is thinking of adopting a Tripawd?

  • The dog will adapt better than you. You will get there. A dog is the most amazing animal and gives you so much joy and companionship no matter how many legs they have.

  1. Berkeley is the best dog I’ve ever been lucky enough to have. Thank you for letting me share his story. 6 months post surgery and he’s doing well.
