Hi everyone,

Ute had his amputation yesterday and we were able to bring him home today.  He did very well before, during and after the surgery, and I was amazed to hear that he was walking around this morning.  He's been able to get around pretty well at home too, and even managed to squeeze himself through the doggie door (with his giant satellite dish around his neck) when he heard us getting his dinner ready!  I couldn't believe it!  He also came and sat next to me when I was eating my dinner.  I'm just amazed at how quickly he's adapting to being on three legs.  Thank you to everyone who took the time to read our post and offer such genuine care, support and advice.  We're looking forward to reading more on Tripawds to find out more ways to help Ute recover.

Thanks again!

Hooray Ute!!

So glad to hear that all went well and you are up and about.  Isn't it absolutely amazing how well and quickly they adapt?  Sending you lots of hugs and good wishes for continued recovery success.

Hugs

Cool name for a very cool dog! I think he's probably adapting so quickly because he's feeling alot better. And judging by that huge grin, he's very happy to have you.

Our beloved 6 y/o Aussie mix Dexter had an amputation of her left front leg on 9/23.  The day we brought her home she was full of energy and acted as if the surgery was "no big deal".  Well, a day or two after we administered her last morphine injection she really began to feel the pain and, let me tell you, It ripped my heart out to hear her moan/squeal in pain upon any movement.  It scared us to death as I thought she was dying due to her unusual behavior (hiding under bushes, tail between her legs, rear-end cowered down, etc.)  Took her back to the Oncologist who said she was doing well and administered more potent NAISDs and pain pills.  It was the most difficult week in all of our lives and I dont' wish it upon anyone.

Today, almost 2 wks. post-op, she is showing slow signs of good improvement!!  She is walking around more, eating a little more, not in so much pain upon movement, and actually went for a brief walk down the block last night!!  It was such a breakthrough that I'm walking on cloud 9 today.  We're hoping to get as much enjoyment out of her while we can and I am so glad that we are slowly getting our baby back; at least for a while.

Hang in there folks, it does get better.

I'm so glad Ute did well!  It's amazing how well they recover.  Finny would not walk or get up at the vet's office but the day after he got home, he walked like there was no problem.  I hope Ute continues to do well!

How is Ute doing on day 5, and how is Dexter doing now; hopefully continuing her improvement?
