Hi  Everyone

You probably thought we had vanished into the mist but I have just been so incredibly busy lately that I just haven't had a minute to let you know how things are.

Well to recap briefly; Inca is a Dobermann who will be 10 years old this August . Last November a tumour appeared on her left shoulder which turned out to be a chondrosarcoma. Within 5 wks we were instructed not to run her off lead, and that amputation was our only option if she were to continue living a "normal" life. She seemed to be different to most other affected dogs in that she felt no pain or discomfort, and the night before her surgery had a great run around the college campus as if nothing was wrong. The surgery and following 3-6 wks were quite difficult for all of us. The drugs were at times ineffective and often made her act very strangely, and we found the depression, lethargy and different personalities hard to deal with!

But for all the dark moments, there were also great ones and it was a huge relief to watch all her old habits and routines return. It felt like we would never see the old Inca back but we definitely did, she is exactly the same clown she was before!! One of her favourite things was to accompany me on my horse in the woods and she still does this ( I make sure I always keep the horse back so Inca feels she still sets the pace!). Really, she has resumed life in every way. She can run, turn, stretch, jump up, retrieve anything that fits in her mouth, get in the car ( I insist she's lifted out) walk to work with me (4 miles round trip), chase deer/squirrels etc ( with VERY limited success) and sleep in any position. To date, she hasn't managed to scratch herself so we help with that.

She has had one x ray and it was completely clear so we can relax a little now. A 10 yr old Dobermann is by no means young so we regard everything as a bonus now. That said, no one can believe how old she is and since being featured on a vet programme here, she's recognised everywhere  we go. I compete in Eventing and she walks every cross country course with me, still thinking she can jump everything to show me how it's done. The hot weather is difficult for her so after a very sunny weekend recently I decided to try clipping her (I am a groomer but had never contemplated clipping a smooth haired dog before) and it has worked a treat! She never had a really typically tight coat and it looks absolutely great on her (#9 blade if anyone's interested) and she feels so much better. We  still have to be careful of her on hot days though…. is this something other people have discovered with Tripawds?

For anyone just going through their dog's surgery, and living with the early times, I know it seems endless but things will definitely improve. Inca is glowing now and looks amazing. It's difficult to catch her on video but here are a few links to the latest ones.

Thanks Tripawds for a great service

Suzanne, Ken and Inca xxxxx

WOWSA Inca!  You are a rockin' girl!   I call foul though - Comet walks like  a duck with 3 legs and you run like the wind!

Wonderful update!

Her Retired AvatarComet - 1999 to 2011

She departed us unexpectedly  January 23, 2011 at the age of 12 1/2.

She was born with a deformed front leg and a tripawd all of her life.

Wow Inca you do run like the wind! She looks so graceful, Tasha gets around really good but not nearly as agile and graceful as Inca. Great update.

It is so great to see your update on Inca and how well she's doing.  I have wondered about her.  She reminds me so much of my Yoda.  Front-leggers who fly!  Tomorrow would have been his one year ampuversary.

The best thing about your update is to read that after all these months her x-rays are still clear!!!

Congrats and thanks for coming back to share!  You may have come back mainly to encourage the new people and their dogs, but you gave me a boost tonight too big-grin

Oh my, can Inca EVER move!!! Wow. I can see why it's so difficult to catch her on video.

AND she can roll and rip out grass in one smooth move.

Well done, Inca!!!

I wasn't even aware you COULD clip her length coat....interesting.  And a movie star on top of it...get a little ink pad and some paper and she can hand out paw prints!!  Go INCA

Inca, you are amazing!  You look like a puppy - not like a 10 year old!  How wonderful!

The heat seems to affect Holly, too.  Yesterday we took a walk and had to stop several times for her to rest - but it was a warm day and we're not yet used to the heat here.  I'm thinking we'll need to keep walks to early mornings and evenings now when the days are warm.  And bring water... I'll be checking out the water bottles I saw mentioned last week!

Thanks for posting those amazing videos of Inca!  She is pawsome!

Hugs,

Holly, Zuzu and Susan

Holly joined the world of tripawds on 12/29/2009. She has a big little sister, Zuzu, who idolizes Holly and tries to make all of her toys into tripawds in Holly's honor. And she's enjoying life one hop at a time!

Way to go Inca. Gus has been panting more lately with our temps being in the low to mid 80's. He has been staying out side most of the night, sometimes all night, since it cools quite nice. He likes to follow us down the lane if we take a tractor back, but I have been trying to tie him before I go, I think it whips him pretty good when he goes back, but he does love the mud once he's there. What a great x-ray report, I envy you, paws up, Gus and Dan

My buddy Gus had a left front amputation on April 7, 2010 and lived a great life until July 26,2010

Wow, Inca looks great!  I can't imagine Sadie walking 4 miles, and hopping through the brush going uphill! She deffinitely looks (and acts) like a youngster!

Sadie is my 9yr old Rott/Shepherd mix. Diagnosed with osteosarcoma in her right scapula 1/28/10. Our brave girl had her amputation 2/13/10 and her last chemotherapy on 6/6/10. Unfortunately, a tumor appeared in her back right leg and on 10/7/2010 Sadie's earthly journey came to an end.  On 10/24/2010 we adopted Ranger, a handsome Rott/Lab mix tripawd (got hit by a car) I think Sadie sent him to us.
