We are about to enter a new chapter in this journey with my mother's dog, Polly.   She is 19 months post diagnosis, 18 mos post amputation.  Yesterday's xrays reveals numerous tiny spots in her lungs.

We go this week to the oncologist.  I'm wondering if anyone has suggestions for this chapter.  She has been taking K9 Immunity Plus the entire experience along with other supplements.

Does anyone recommend:  more chemo?, different medication?, different supplements?  alternative therapies?

Thank you all.

First, I'm sorry to hear the spots on her lungs 🙁

I only have one suggestion…Dr. Dressler's supplement called Apocaps .  I have my dog Maggie on them.  I just got his new book in the mail yesterday and have been reading his section on Apocaps and many other vets are/were impressed with the results and have started using them on their patients.  Even stories of tumors disappearing.  Not sure if it will help your dog at all but worth a shot.  You can get the Apocaps on Amazon's website.(as Dr. Dressler's new book too)

Great suggestions.   Do you think she should take those in addition to K9 Immunity ?

Carol, I'm so sorry to hear this. We hope your Mom's dog can beat the odds and kick those mets away for a long as pawsible (many dogs here have, so don't give up hope!).

I looked back through your old posts as listed in your profile, but I couldn't find out where you said what type of cancer she has. Not knowing I can't really recommend anything but I can tell you that lots of us have taken Metronomic Therapy (oral, low dose ongoing chemo at home), with great results, but I'm not sure if it works for you type of cancer. Metronomics often keeps lung mets stable and has helped lots of us. Talk to your oncologist about it.

As for taking K9 Immunity and Apocaps at the same time...I think they both fall into the same category of immune boosting supplements so I would talk to a canine nutritionist about their differences before you take them together.

Quoting out of Dr. Dressler's new book:

"Second Priority: Full Spectrum Neutraceuticals(listed in order of importance):

Apocaps :  useful for most dogs, see Chapter 12 for details and precautions

Artemisinin : Useful for some dogs..may be rotated with Apocaps , see Chapter 12

Neoplasene: May be useful as a salvage technique, may be used along with Apocaps , see Chapter 12

"Third Priority:  Other Full Spectrum Supplements:

Mushrooms: useful for most dogs, especially when used with the product called Transfer Factor, see page 181

Krill oil and/or fish oil: useful for most dogs, see page 202

Dietary enzymes: used to predigest food, useful for most dogs, see page 207

Modified citrus pectin: useful for most dogs, see page 190

General multivitamin: useful for most dogs and strongly recommended if using a completely cooked home diet.  see page 186

Doxycycline: useful for most dogs, see page 192.

In case you're wondering the Priority 1 supplements are for side effect management for say, chemotherapy or radiation, so I didn't include.

FWIW, I give Maggie both K9Immunity Plus and Apocaps ..and Dr. Dressler recommends them.

Sorry to hear about Polly's lung mets. From Maggie's mom's list above, we are trying artemisinin for our Abby - she has 2 lung mets. She is also on metronomic protocol (a daily chemo at-home pill - Cytoxan + Piroxicam).  The arte and the Cytoxan are the two main things we are doing, plus she also gets K9 Immunity and takes fish oil plus some antioxidants.

The arte is a little tricky to dose, as it needs to be given away from foods with iron, but there is an "artemisinin_and_cancer" group on Yahoo that has lots of info about dosing and protocols.

Good luck!

Jackie, Abby's mom

Abby: Aug 1, 2009 – Jan 10, 2012. Our beautiful rescue pup lived LARGE with osteosarcoma for 15 months – half her way-too-short life. I think our "halflistic" approach (mixing traditional meds + supplements) helped her thrive. (PM me for details. I'm happy to help.) She had lung mets for over a year. They took her from us in the end, but they cannot take her spirit! She will live forever in our hearts. She loved the beach and giving kisses and going to In-N-Out for a Flying Dutchman. Tripawds blog, and a more detailed blog here. Please also check out my novel, What the Dog Ate. Now also in paperback! Purchase it at Amazon via Tripawds and help support Tripawds!

Sorry to hear about your baby. I realize that this was back in August and I hope it worked out well for you. We have a puppy with the worst doggie cancer out there. He has Histiocytic Sarcoma. It's always fatal, usually within a matter of weeks to no more than 4 months after diagnosis. We put him on Neoplasene (http://www.buck.....icals.net/ or neoplasene.net) and he's now in his 7th month. He had an ultrasound and chest x-ray this week and they can't find any signs of cancer.

We have Dr. Dressler's book as well and we cook all of Indy's food, but we're certain the Neo is what's keeping him going. If you still have a chance, it could be worth looking into. Indy also has a blog if you want to see everything he's on.  Indyandcaninecancer.blogspot.com.

Best Wishes for you and your furkid!
