My Roxie had her front leg amputated due to bone cancer on July 8, 2021.  She is a7 year old obese girl trying to move around on 3 legs...I have her confined to an area right now to recover, the problem we are having is she is peeing in her area while laying down instead of trying to go outside....anyone else have this issue?

Hi Roxie & Family, welcome. Your future posts won't require approval so post away! We are sorry you're dealing with amputation but glad you found us, we'll try to help make the adjustment as easy as possible.

So what kind of pain management is she getting? Specifically what kind of medication, the dosages, and frequency? I ask because typically, if a dog is pretty woozy from the meds, they will have some mobility challenges. When they have extra weight on them it throws them off even more. You definitely don't want to eliminate pain meds this early in recovery, but there is a point where you and your vet can fine tune the dosages and frequency so that she gets around better.

Also, do your floors have traction ? If not, it's important to add rubber-backed throw rugs to help her get around easier.

And a harness with a handle like the Ruffwear Webmaster or Flagline are super helpful to assist her in getting up. Although we don't recommend using them until stitches are out, if you need to use one, you can put a t-shirt on her first, under the harness, so that the straps don't bother her incision.

Also, you can try a DIY grocery bag sling to assist her too! Some dogs will tolerate it some will not but it's important to try so that she can get her sea legs.

Even though she has extra weight on her, now is a good time to help her drop the pounds! Most dogs have reduced appetites during recovery so work with your vet to come up with a plan to minimize her food intake and keep it that way as she moves out of recovery mode. Is she drinking and hydrated? Don't cut back liquid intake, you really want her to stay hydrated.

If you're still online I'm in the Tripawds Chat for a few minutes if you want to talk. Stay tuned for feedback from others and keep us posted on how she is doing.

Hopefully you got some reassurance from the great insight Jerry shared.

Everything  is spot on about keeping her hydrated, her pain management causing woozy  sometimes,  , providing  traction , et.

Yes, peeing in her bed as opposed to trying to  go potty outside does indeed happen  early in recovery sometimes.

It is good that she is peeing though....even if not outside.  Pooping may take a few days.

Try lots of gentle massaging  up and down her spine, her neck, her shoulders, etc  before trying to help her up to potty,

We'll look for your response,  especially  about her meds.

Hang in there, rec doesn't  last furever, just seems like it!

thank you! I did chat with Jerry and it helped me a lot! She is eating and drinking very good, so staying hydrated! Today is day 5 after surgery and still hasn't pooped yet...so watching and hoping she can soon....figuring this has to make her uncomfortable too! She is currently on Rimadyl, tramadol, Garbebetin(spelling) and antibiotic. Her being overweight is making it harder for her, but she is trying! We have cut her food way back and watching every thing that goes in her! We love her so much and just try to stay positive and hope shes able to recover from this!

Glad Jerry was able to put out mind at ease (she's really good at that😎).

You're  doing a great job and yes, she will get through this!!!  I joined this community  on day six think I had made a horrible  decision!  This community  pulled me back from the edge with support and knowledge and gave me reassurance.   I can tell you,  although  while recovery  was no picnic, it was a GREAT decision!!

Hang in there, keep doing what you're  doing.  Keep in mind recovery  from MAJOR surgery,  all while trying to adjust to three legs, doesn't  happen overnight!

I am sooooo happy to report that Roxie FINALLY pooped AND peed OUTSIDE!   It turns out we were not letting her do her thing, like she wanted too...once we let her lay on the grass and start walking on her own, she took care of her business....we still use the sling to help her out and not to let her overdo it, but now know she doesn't want us to use the sling when she has to do her thang!  We are so happy that she has accomplished this feet!

YAAAAAY FOR.  poopiconpoopicon AND PEE.....OUTSIDE poopiconpoopicon AND PEE!!  EVEN BETTER!!👏👍

And yes, some dogs basically  freeze up when trying to "help" them with a sling.  Good job of figuring  out Eoxie wants to do her potty bidnezz  her way!!!😎

Thanks for sharing  the great news!!  Onward and upward!
