Hi everyone! My name is Courtney and my 9 year old boxer mix Kayden had a right rear leg amputation 10 days ago. At the beginning of last week she was moving pretty well on 3 legs, acting more like herself, ears up etc. for the past 4 days in the morning and at least 4 to 6 times a day she has periods of whole body trembling. Which is at times accompanied by panting. Putting a towel over her and sitting with her sometimes helps stuff these things but at times does not. I have taken her back into her surgeons who say everything is normal in terms of wound healin g. Temperature, she is still eating and drinking. They suggest it could be because of nerve pain and was put on additional mess for that however the trembling still occurs. They also indicated it could be from stress or anxiety from re adjusting to life on 3 legs. I am just reaching out to see if anyone has ever had a similar experience- how long it lasted and what was done to help your pet. Thanks so much!

Hi Courtney, thanks for joining. Your future posts won't need approval. I probably have more questions than answers right now but this will help us guide you to helping her. So....how come Kayden lost her leg?
What kind of meds did the docs give you? And are you combining them with anything else?
Another question: what is her activity level like? How much walking and exercise is she getting? At this point it's still early to allow her to overdo things. Trembling and panting are pain indicators, no doubt, so I'm not a vet but it sounds to me like what happens when a new Tripawd is exhausted. When exactly do the symptoms show up? After walks? Randomly? And have you tried cutting back on her activity for a bit?

My Happy Hannah was on Tramadol, Gabapentin, Rimadyl and an antibiotic. She needed to be on her pain meds for three weeks (reducing doses) Every dog is different.

I was going to say the same thing, that it sounds like she could be in pain. Murphy also came home on 3 different pain meds and took those for about 2 weeks then we weaned him off.

Murphy had his right front leg amputated due to histiocytic sarcoma at 7 years old. He survived 4 years, 2 months & 1 week, only to be taken by hemangiosarcoma at 11 1/2 years 6/12/17

Hi Kayden and Courtney! My dog is 8 days post op now, and I have noticed the last couple days she has also started the trembling and panting. But it comes randomly. They have her on Tramadol, 1 other pain med, Rimadyl and an antibiotic, and I talked to her vet last night, and he told me to start her back on the Gabapentin. She seemed to rest better last night, so I'm hoping she is feeling better today. The trembling worries me...maybe because it's a sign I can actually see, and usually means they are uncomfortable in some way. Hopefully you and your pup get some relief and answers soon!

Tramadol works differently in different dogs. Our old Golden, Gus, was a mess on Tramadol...restless, panting, etc. Murphy, on the other hand, would take his dosage and go to sleep. I guess it is kind if the same thing as the way different people react to pain meds. One of my sons would be almost insomniac with hydrocodone after surgery. The other would zonk out on the same dosage.

Murphy is a five year old Lab/Chessie cross. He was hit by a car on 10/29/12 and became a Tripawd on 11/24/12. On 2/5/13, he had a total hip replacement on his remaining back leg. He has absolutely no idea that he has only three legs!
UPDATE: Murphy lived his life to the fullest, right up until an aggressive bone lesion took him across the Rainbow Bridge on April 9, 2015 and he gained his membership in the April Angels. Run free, my love. You deserve it!
