Otis had his fourth Chemo today. We were driving home and when we got about 10 minutes from TUFTS I noticed he was breathing oddly.  He was panting and having uneven breathing.  Otis does not pant very often.

So we call and turn around and went back to TUFTS.  We sat in a room with him for 15 mins and still the heavy breathing. We decided to leave him for the night and then the ER doc suggested X-rays. We are waiting for those at this time.

He has been doing great and now this scary episode.

Otis - 121 lbs pre amp - 114 lbs post amp and now 118 lb Great Dane - English Mastiff X.  Started limping on 12/24/16.  Diagnosed with Osteosarcoma 12/28/16 - amputation of front left leg on 1/6/17.  Stitches out and 1st round of Chemo on 1/19/17.   2nd round of Carboplatin on 2/10/17 - 3rd round on 3/2/2017.  4th round was scheduled for 3/22/17 - however due to low WBC postponed - 4th Chemo completed on 3/28/17.  Had breathing difficulties, stayed in Tufts ICU overnight.  Due for 2 more rounds of Chemo but we are opting to go with homeopathy with Dr. Loops instead.

Hi sugar,

I am so sorry to hear Otis reaction to chemo was different this time, you've done the right thing driving him back.

Although my girl sailed through chemo (up to Palladia) I was warned things could change with each treatment.

Have you got the X-ray results already?

Was Otis given Palladia before chemo?

Panting is very often a symptom of nausea and nausea is common with chemo ...

Please let us know how he is as soon as possible, me and Eurydice are keeping paws and fingers crossed for

Eurydice 77kg/170lb Great Dane limping end of April 2016, amputation (right front leg/osteosarcoma) 4 May 2016 6 courses of carboplatin followed by metronomic therapy, lung mets found 30 Nov 2016. 3 courses of doxorubicin, PET scan 26 Jan 2017 showed more mets so stopped chemo. Holistic route April 2017. Lung X-ray 5 May 2017 showed several tennis ball size mets, started cortisone and diuretics. Miss Cow earned her XXL silver wings 12 June 2017, 13 months and 1 week after amputation and 6 1/2 months after lung mets, she was the goofiest dawg ever and is now happily flying from cloud to cloud woof woofing away :-)

They could not find anything wrong with him after vitals, X-rays and ultrasound.  They checked for fluid is his pericardium, bloat, spleen issues, temp etc.  They left us in a room with him alone for 15 minutes and he did not improve. They thought maybe anxiety because of his issues with being away from us.

He had a little higher temp - however Oncologist said he usuallly does when he is there.  She also said his color was a little darker than expected.

We chose to leave him there overnight for observation.

Video of his panting and breathing.

Oh gosh! Thanks so much for updating us!!! I, like everyone here, have been checking, checking, checking.....

Is he still having breathing issue? Are they doing anything to settle his breathing a bit?? Certainly, under "normal"'conditions these would be sysmptons of pain. Any suspicions there?

Has it subsided at all?

Are they tying any of this jnto the chdmo treatment? Any explanation as to why his color woukd be darker? Again, seems like "something" about thst chemo!

Really glad all his tests checked out okay!! That's good!!

I know I'm asking questions you have probably already asked...a dozen different ways!!

CHEERING FOR SWEET OTIS!!! 🙂 🙂 🙂

Oh wow poor Otis! Ok well let's look at it like this: NO METS, and overall he seems to be in great shape! He has the very best docs looking after him so whatever this is, they will know what to do if it requires treatment.

It was super smart of you to leave him overnight, as hard as I know that was. We'll wait for an update tomorrow OK?

All of us are sending lots of pawsitivity to you and Otis.

He was still breathing like that when we left.  Maybe not quite as bad.  They weren't planning on giving him anything - just observing him.

Not sure what the color being darker would indicate and never thought to ask.

Oncologist said it may be Chemo related or a coincidence of something else evolving.   I have a mandatory work meeting until 1:30 p.m tomorrow so I won't be able to go see him until later tomorrow.  I hope to get a morning call that he is breathing normally.

Okay, Otis was settli g down some, so that's good. And I think he'll settle down even more if, for no other reason, he's had a loooong day! As have you!

IF it is chemo related, the further Otis moves away from the time it was given, he should start improving.

Just stinks that he's having this reaction to "whatever".

A lot of "us" are up late and "others" are up early, so update anytime you get an update!

Oh no, Otis! Feel better soon, sweet boy. I am sorry you all have to be dealing with this, I know how distressing it is. Hopefully he will be feeling better after a night of observation, and he's in good hands. I will be looking for updates and sending positive thoughts your way. -- Kerry and Mosby

TUFTS just called and OMD scared me.  When I saw who is was calling - on caller I.D. - I thought the worst.

After being updated on the fact that he is doing a bit better and breathing with his mouth closed - Oncologist said that since he is on the ICU - that we had to let them know if he arrested - should they 1.  Let him go. 2.  CPR and meds or 3. Open heart massage. I was leaning towards #1 as I think he's been through enough.  Hubby chose #2 and I agreed with him.  I ruled out #3.  I just couldn't stand the thought of him getting more surgery.  She said that she does not see any of this happening but the ICU protocol is to ask those choices.

They want to get a pulse ox on him and are waiting for him to get tired enough to put one on his lip.   Yeah good luck with that!

Thanks to everyone for the pawsitive energy.

Whew!! I'm sure thst scared the heck out of you!!!

Glad they're pursuing checking his oxygen intake. At least I think that's what they're doing. Do you know if they have oxygen going into his cage, or a tube in his nose? It may not be needed, but it is something that may help if he hasn't settled down...which it sounds like he has.

Yeah, it sounds like a common practice when a dog or cat is in ICU. I'm with you and hubby.....if it had to be necessary, go with #2!

Breathing with his mouth closed and not panting sounds like a big improvement indeed!! 🙂

COME ON OTIS!!! Let's get over this hurdle tonight and get your sweet butt home tomorrow for more spoiling and loving!! 🙂

Love and lots of hugs!
