Hi everyone,

Koko gets her sutures out in a few days and they will be going over her chemo options. Does anyone have any updated reviews/experience on the metronomic protocol? Things change so often I wanted to make sure I have all my ducks in a row for her appt. She is also being treated holistically with eastern and western herbals, artemesinin, medicinal mushrooms, immune booster, etc

Since the in-person vet office situation is still crappy with them not allowing owners in...I'm not going to put her through IV chemo. Originally I was until she is nervous now with the amputation/walking plus being without me. Sucks because that was my go to treatment option. Has anyone gone this route with oral chemo and/or prednisone with herbs or similar? Her lungs did not show met-on xrays; however they did not get clean margins most definitely microscopic metas- elsewhere. Any info is greatly appreciated!

Oooh big day coming up! Enjoy the milestone, you've both come a long way!

Does anyone have any updated reviews/experience on the metronomic protocol?

When we asked about it many years ago in relation to using metronomics as a chemotherapy alternative, we were told by our Jerry's oncologist that it's not an effective alternative, at least when compared to IV chemotherapy. As of 2019, this is the latest that we know of, according to Colorado State University's Dr. Benard Sequin. We asked about metronomics in relation to treating a dog with lung metastasis in this article, "Lung Metastasis in Tripawds with Limb Cancer: Now What?"

Question: What about metronomic chemotherapy for metastasis?

Dr. Séguin: Metronomics for metastasis so far, the few studies that I’ve seen, it hasn’t been helpful. So there again the evidence is what we call retrospective that I’m aware of and therefore there can be some weaknesses in that type of data. However, there’s more than one study and they came to the conclusion that metronomics – and we’re talking about Cyclophosphamide and what we call a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug. They have not been helpful in prolonging survival for metastasis.

Question: Is metronomic chemotherapy something that you would still recommend if somebody wanted to do it? Are you OK giving it?

Dr. Séguin: Yeah, I think it’s relatively safe and I think it’s important to educate owners as to what the side effects can be, to be watching for those, so that we don’t make – give another problem to a dog. It wouldn’t be wrong to offer it to a client, knowing that it’s unlikely to be very effective. But if a client who wants to try, I think chemotherapy is very well-tolerated in dogs and the side effects in general are minimal. From that perspective, I don’t think that we really are harmful and it might have a benefit.

But the reality is that for most dogs, it’s probably not going to be helpful.

As far as:

Has anyone gone this route with oral chemo and/or prednisone with herbs or similar?

You might want to check out Boone's incredible story. His people opted for K9 Medicinals mushroom therapy.
