Liam got his bandages off today!  Now he can itch all the itchy places and feel the sun on his nekid skin!  His coat was not really nice before the surgery, so now he has the "middle school mustache" look going for him.  His vet actually joked that she may have a fuller mustache.....

Anyhow, the Monster Dog has been given the green light to slowly start exploring in the yard when the dogs are not being nutty.  He uses the leg when he is moving slowly, but when he speeds up, he holds it up and keeps the weight off it - for now!

Weeeeee!!

Yay Liam.  Awesome news.  I am glad you are doing well and getting to explore a little.  You will start using that leg again as you gain strength 🙂

Yay Liam!

Don't get a sunburn now on the delicate, nekid skin.

I love the mental picture that "middle school mustache" conjures up. It is so great to hear that Liam is doing this well.

Kathi and the Turbotail April Angel...and the Labradork

Murphy is a five year old Lab/Chessie cross. He was hit by a car on 10/29/12 and became a Tripawd on 11/24/12. On 2/5/13, he had a total hip replacement on his remaining back leg. He has absolutely no idea that he has only three legs!

UPDATE: Murphy lived his life to the fullest, right up until an aggressive bone lesion took him across the Rainbow Bridge on April 9, 2015 and he gained his membership in the April Angels. Run free, my love. You deserve it!

We got lucky and my mom met us for a camping trip.  She is a human physical therapist (for 50 years now), so I asked her for some ideas on how to help Liam with his recovery.  She sat down with him and worked on him and gave us some good ideas.  If you are interested, you can find them on our blog here.  Gentle goes!  He is napping hard now, silly monster dog!

Good report.  I am very glad you blogged about your mom helping Liam out.  Very interesting read about the therapy.  🙂   I am glad you got some time away to work with the dogs and not be wired in with phones, internet etc.  I love reading your blog and seeing the sled dogs in action

Oh what more can you ask for, a weekend in the mountains and a PT on the team? Yay! I loved the exercises she did with Liam, they are the exact same ones we've seen PTs do for new amputees too. Nice work Ma!

Howdy gang!  Good news - we made the trek north to Alaska and are finally in our new not-yet-finished cabin and new not-yet-finished dog yard!  It has been a loooong summer and fall for us, and it feels good to be here with our feet on the ground doing all the projects that are still needing attention.  (Fence work in Alaska in December is not terribly fun!)

Anyhow, wanted to let you know that Liam and the gang traveled well and put up with our impromptu camping while we worked hard to get the place ready for us all.  Right before we left town, I had what I thought was a cyst removed from Finny - Liam's grandma - which we found out during the drive was a grade 3 soft tissue sarcoma!  So glad we got that taken care of with clean margins!  So Liam and Finny, our shaved nekkid kids, are bunked together so they can keep their nekkid parts warm from each other's wooly parts.  You should see them romp and play in their new dog yard, which we made bigger than the last one.  You would think they were both 9-yr olds the way they carry on!

Anyhow, wanted to let folks know we all made it safely and are ready to enjoy the lovely short cold days of a northern winter!

I saw your update and pictures on Facebook. What a trip! I can't imagine making that journey with all of your animals. We think we have a carload with one or two!

It was good to hear the update on Liam. So glad, too, that Finny has clear margins and is back to acting like a pup again.

Stay warm!

Ohhhhhh yaay for making it to the Great White North! Congrats you guys, it must feel GREAT to be there after all you've been through. Sorry to hear about Finny but at least it got removed. Sheesh, tell those dawgs no more medical issues!

Be sure to tell Liam he's a star and helping others in the future:

Liam Update:  Well, as "luck" would have it, we are back with the oncology folks with Mr. Liam, likely now facing a lymphoma diagnosis.  His lymph nodes under his jaw, in the front of his shoulders, at his hocks, and in his groin are all swollen, hard, and non-painful.  The vets feel this is unrelated to the chondrosarcoma from last fall, and that he is just one of the small percentage that ends up with multiple cancers.  We sent a cytology out yesterday to see if we can determine exactly what is going on and get some action plans to consider.

Liam seems to be feeling otherwise fine.  No issues with his lack of scapula and still doing all the naughty things he has always done.  He is currently hanging out in the shade in the yard with the pack watching the summer tick by and no doubt dreaming of cold snowy days ahead, or possibly the taste of the fat squirrels that taunt him.

Good thoughts for our dirty wow-wow.

Oh Liam! We hope this isn't serious. You're such a strong doggie, I know whatever it is you can tackle no problem. Keep on keepin on and let us know what the docs say OK? We'll be thinking of you!
