Hi Jake's Mom,
I'm glad to hear it sounds like a false alarm on the wet bed thing. Although he is still working on recovery so an accident isn't the end of the world.
Try not to worry. (I am telling myself that as well.) We worry did he pee too much, he isn't peeing enough, he is sleeping too much, he isn't sleeping enough, and on and on. Only in my case replace he with she.
I'm glad to hear that Jake sounds like he is doing well.
Debra & Emily
Debra & Emily, a five year old doberman mix, who was diagnosed with an osteosaecoma. She had a right rear leg amputation on May 19, 2009. On November 10, 2009 she earned her wings and regained her fourth leg.
Today is day 15 post-op... Jake went to the vet to have his post-op exam and all his frankenstein staples removed. He was so excited to be there and to visit with everyone. You'd think he'd remember that every time he's been there in the past month... they've knocked him out and took chunks of his bone (biospy) or just plain chopped off his leg!!! But Jake's vet (Dr. John Lucado) and all his staff at Wesley Chapel Veterinary Hospital are so wonderful, loving and caring... that Jake can't help but to love them all! Maybe deep down inside, he really knows that they're just trying to help him...
So his incision looked a little more red after the staples came out... but otherwise, looking great! I asked the doc when Jake can finally go back swimming... and he said as soon as you get home! Yay! We'll do the swimming thing tomorrow cause I need my hubby to be there to help Jake in and out of the pool for right now. The ruffware harness we ordered is only arriving late next week... I will definitely be taking tons of pictures and videos and post to Jake's blog for all of you to see!
So today was a really good day... Jake had tons of energy and was hopping around all over the place. Maybe a bit too much for my taste. I'm just so paranoid that he'll overdo it, or hurt one of his remaining good legs... Plus his 'brother' Wolfie's favorite past-time was always to run by and body slam Jake... Of course, I'm making sure he doesn't do that right now...

Way to go Jake. Here's hoping or hopping for many good days ahead.

Oh Jake, that's great news! What a lucky boy you are to be able to swim this time of year. Have fun! Can't wait to see the photos and videos.

Oh Wolfie – no body slams yet! I can relate. My nearly former roommate's dog is the jealous type who thinks everyone should love him first. After Yoda had been limping and I eventually found out it was cancer and that there was the risk of possible fractures, what did Rummy (Yoda's roommate) seem to do all the time? He'd come bumbling between us when I was giving Yoda attention. Yoda would be laying down and Rummy would repeatedly just nearly miss stepping on Yoda's fragile leg over and over. Ohhh Rummy and I had a very rocky relationship between then and Yoda's amputation.
On the other hand though, Yoda's former roommate and good buddy, Lando, who moved up to Minnesota, seemed sensitive to the change in Yoda post-amp. when we went to visit. Lando's wrestling strategy always use to be to attack the legs, especially the front ones, to put Yoda off balance. But when they play-wrestled at Lando's house in MN, Lando left Yoda's legs completely alone. Of course, this meant Lando lost repeatedly, whereas he used to win most of the time, but what a sweetie!
Way to go with your recovery, Jake! Keep fighting the good fight against your cancer. And Jake's Mom, keep fighting the good fight against your paranoia

From everything all my vet friends have told me... chlorine will not hurt a dog. There are some dogs with very sensitive skin though, and that might cause some problems... but in our case, it has never caused a problem... We also towel dry our dogs really, really well afterwards, so they never end up having any issues with hot spots and stuff.
Jake really enjoyed himself in the pool today... but he definitely couldn't do everything he normally could before... I noticed his butt was tilting sideways while swimming... We really need to get that float coat soon! We put a leather belt around him to help him get in and out of the water... but he was definitely feeling nervous getting in. I know it was not the most comfortable thing for him... but it was better than nothing. He was soooo tired after playing in the pool, that he has been sleeping ever since! Tomorrow we'll go in again...

I'm so glad Jake is back in the water and feeling good. He is such a pretty boy.

Jake & Family
We are very sorry that we were not able to get here sooner, but as you can tell there are many supportive people here with excellent advice. I often say that we must remember to treat the spirit as well as the body. Find something that they love and exploit that love to help give them purpose. Much like I did with Cherry, you appear to have discovered that love/purpose by accident very early in Jake's recovery. Swimming is an excellent exercise now that the incision has fully healed. If you are like me, you keep the chlorine levels in the pool at minimal levels. My first two Standard Poodles would swim for hours and were such good swimmers that they would make retrievers envious. (Actually Standard Poodles were bred for retrieving and have webed feet.) The only issue that concerned me was the Sandy would splash the water with her paws and then catch the drops before the hit the surface. Drinking too much chlorinated water is not good, but if Jack was used to swimming before, I cannnot see any reason to worry. Paddle on Boy!!!
Good Luck and we look forward to photos/movies of the swimming adventures,
Bob & Cherry

Thank you everyone for your comments and support! I know that several of you are going through your own troubled times with your babies... so please know that I really appreciate each and every single comment...
Bob and Cherry... I just checked out your web blog and I'm so glad that Cherry is still around and feeling good at 11 months post-op. It gives me great encouragment for Jake! We also definitely keep the chlorine in the pool at a minimum... and luckily, Jake has never been interested in drinking the water, so that's a good thing.
This weekend was one of the best 2 days since Jake first broke his leg and this nitemare began a month ago... I just posted a bunch of pictures and videos on Jake's Journey blog for day 16 and 17 post op. He was just so happy to be swimming again
... even though his butt and back legs were all over the place... off balance... Hopefully, when we finally buy the K9 float coat
, that will help correct that! In the meantime, we did order his ruffware harness and that's supposed to arrive later this week. I will use that to get him in and out of the pool...

Jake looks happy to be back in the pool--which is Awesome! Polo will not get in the pool (I mean before), so I don’t think he will now--although water therapy is excellent. I've taken him in with me before--he wont have any part of it. He’ll jump right into the bay at his Grandpawrents house (I used paw in a word) without thinking twice about it. We have this season called “Winter” up here in the Panhandle so the water is getting cold anyway. Then again what I call cold is warm to the folks up North.
We’re glad Jake is doing well. Polo and Mike
