To anyone who has gone through this with young children - how did you explain things to them? My son is 4 1/2 and very inquisitive and sensitive - how can I explain why Marley will be coming home without her leg? I'm worried he'll think this might happen to him... I did find a book on Amazon - Annie Loses Her Leg but Finds her Way by Sandra J. Philipson which should help. Just looking for any other suggestions...
just be honest. explain to your little one that her leg is sick and the doctor will need to take it off in order for marley to get better. explain that sometimes people have to have the same surgery. read the book together and ask him how it makes him feel that marley will have to lose her sick leg, and go from there. dont worry so much. its okay. big hug for you. bigger hug for marley and prayers too.
Although I am not a parent and perhaps not qualified as such to provide an answer, Lalla was a big hit with kids all 'round, on whatever number of legs she had. If a kid did ask me directly, my answer would be: "well, how many legs have you got?" and to the reply of "two" I'd say "well, she still has more legs than you" which created alot of giggles. I did watch friends with kids as they provided answers, but honestly the kids questions were much more based on "can i take her for a walk?" or "can she still play football?". To see a friend's ten year old swim with Lalla in the ocean was a sight I will never forget. Kids are far more accepting than we think.

You might also add that Marley will not change except in appearance. She will still play and love the family as she always has.
