Emily had her third chemo today. It was raining so my husband hurried her in for her treatment. While waiting for her appt. Emily had a potty accident. The staff cleaned it up but Emily slipped on the wet floor and fell. She just layed on the ground and cried for about two minutes. It was all my husband could do to leave her there and go to work. He called me to tell me and I cried and want to cry every time I think about it. I hate that she has to go through this. It is hard on her confidence when she falls and it so hard on us, too.
Debra & Emily, a five year old doberman mix, who was diagnosed with an osteosaecoma. She had a right rear leg amputation on May 19, 2009. On November 10, 2009 she earned her wings and regained her fourth leg.
Ouch, poor Emily and poor you. Is it unusual that she had the accident or fell? Or just a blow to her (and your) confidence? I hope she is better and relatively symptom free after the chemo.

It is so tough on us when they fall. Trouble's never really hurt herself, but OMG, it takes my breath away. We purchased some booties for wearing when on slick surfaces - tile or wood flooring. They work well except they don't fit Trouble real well so I have to be extremely careful when I put them on to be sure they aren't going to twist and cause a sore. But it works really well for the confidence.

It is unusual for her to have an (potty) accident but we just recently switched to Innova EVO dog food and she is gassy while getting used to it. Maybe she thought she had gas or maybe she was nervous. Thankfully she does not fall often. When she has fallen it has been while she is trying to jump on something. I think she forgets her leg isn't there.

Oh I'm so sorry that happened! Give a big hug to Emily from us. Thankfully, the chemo sessions don't go on forever. They'll be over soon and you can all get on with the business of living and enjoying life. Hang in there.

Just give her lots of extra love and hugs and massage and attention. She will feel better and so will you!
I know it is hard to see them hurt when they are already going through so much. It truely is about getting through one day at a time, tomorrow will be better.

My oncologist said be careful about drastic diet changes during chemo. Although Sunny is recommended for chemo and I want to learn more about the grain free diets I found out they have a store here in Atlanta that specializes in organic and healthy diets for dog. I am lucky to live in Atlanta where there are such great resources.

I went to a book signing today for Hollywood Trainer Joel Silverman's new book, and we were given little goody bags. We got dog food samples from the Honest Kitchen which dehydrates raw foods and you just add water. This seems like a great way to get the raw foods that are full of nutrients without all the prep work! You may want to look into this brand.

What did your oncologist say about why to avoid diet changes? We mixed the new food with the old for a couple of weeks and made sure we told our oncologist about the food change. Emily is sure a lot gassier than the other two dogs even though they have the same diet.

Food changes: Normally vets say to be careful about diet changes. but of course any dog that checks into the hospital suddenly is put on an entirely new diet. It can't be ALL that important.
Having said that, i keep expecting tazzie to react to all the goodies he has been getting, including new foods. Normally I am cautious about this. But so far so good on that front.
I had to laugh at your comment about all the treats Tazzie has been getting. Emily is even more spoiled than before. We even say "If Emily wants it, Emily gets it." I have made the exception of only giving her grain free treats.

Very sorry to here of Emily's problems. The stress that her body is undergoing is extremely great and can lead to such difficulties. For Cherry the chemotherapy was far worse than the amputation. While she never really exibited the signs of nausea, her appetite totally shut down. I could even tast the chemicals within her body as I kissed her. I had to stuff nearly every morsal of food during this two month period. Like you, if Cherry did show any desire for a food - she got it, and to a major degree that still hold today more than eight months into the recovery journey. Our pantry is filled with five types of canned food, three types of kibbles, three types of biscuits and two types of jerky strips and this morning's breakfast was Cheerios followed by soy milk. Point here is that we have had less problems with changing her diet but rather keeping up with a changing appetite.
Falling and potentially loosing blatter control will always be a great concern to us. Such accidents do occur and you are right to be concerned about them, but keep in focus the progress you have made. It can only help Emily to remain as positive around her as you can. They really are very tuned to our feelings, and as much as I hate to say it, Emily was probably picking up some of the apprehension when you were dropping her off. She will get over this setback and continue down the recovery process. Cherry just finished her eighth month of her recovery and things really started to improve with the end of the chemicals in her system.

Congratulations on 8 months recovery! Emily's fall was much harder on my husband (he dropped her off) than it was for her. Then when he called me I cried. Emily cried, too, when she fell but not as long as I did! Thank goodness she could not see me. Emily's protocol is four chemo treatments and she has had three. I will be glad when they are done but want them to continue at the same. Like all of us, I just can't accept lung mets. A big, big thank you for all the encouragement. I knew you guys would understand.
