I posted Dozer's story on his last day of chemo on June 6th.  Now just a few months later we are making the final decisions for his last moments.

He had been doing amazingly well.  Although he developed a cough, lung xrays show that is his lungs are clear, the cancer had not spread, he has been on doggie asthma medication.  As of Thursday, he has not been able to get up on his own.  His back legs are not working.  5 years ago he was diagnosed with hip displasia.  The amputation has sped up the arthritis and now we are to this point.  It's horrible to watch, he cannot get up, he's not eating.  Everything my husband and I have done since 2000 has been for Dozer.   We do NOT regret anything we have done for him since he was diagnosed with the cancer.  It gave us more time than we thought we would have with him.

We plan to have the vet come to the house this week.  This is never easy.  I am going to miss him so much, he added so much to our lives.  He's a beautiful dog, he smiles and talks (in his malemute way).  My husband and I are heartbroken.  Our other dog, Rawley is going to be so lost with him, I don't really know how he's going to react. He actually encouraged Dozer to get up during the recovery after the amputation, it was so sweet.

Please say a little prayer for Dozer tonight

Megan and Brendon Peterson

I was so sad to hear about Dozier's decline.  He, and your family, are in my prayers.  What a hard and brave thing you are doing for him in making the decision to let him go if that is what needs to be done.  My heart goes out to you and also to Rawley.

I am so very sorry to hear about Dozer, yet so happy that you have no regrets and have had that extra time with him.  I know our extra time is worth everything to me.  Lots of good thoughts headed to you as you face the tough decisions.

Our hearts are with you at this sad time.  It is never easy to let go but Dozer has let you know - it's time.  Take comfort in the time and quality of life you gave him.  I grew up with Malamutes so there is a soft spot in my heart for them.  Yes they talk and are as loyal as a dog can get.  I have also lived with a dog with advanced hip dysplasia.  You are making the right decision and Dozer loves you for it.

You and your entire family are in my thoughts and prayers this week!  I applaud you for listening to Dozer and making this hard choice.  Enjoy what precious little time you have left!  There'll be time to cry and be angry later.

Dozer, Megan, and Brendon

Our hearts go out to you at this very difficult moment.  While we all know that this journey has not been easy, it is great to hear that you have no regrets about traveling down this path and enjoying your extra time together.  I have a web page within my web site, dedicated to all of us who share such great love for our companions.  I received permission to include a "Sunday Strip" from "For Better or Worse".  This strip helps to remind me that "we will never really be without them, for the gifts that they have given me will live with us forever."  Please take comfort tonight in the company of such love.

You will be in our prayers,

Bob & Cherry

Megan, Brendan and Rawley,

We are so very sad to hear this news. Thank you for letting us know, we understand how hard it is to write about.

Saying goodbye to our furbabies is so heartwrenching, especially after they were so courageous and strong while fighting cancer. We are so sorry. And as hard as it is to accept that it's time to say goodbye, please try to remember that he is so proud of you for being just as brave as he's been, by helping him through this last battle.

You are most definitely the person Dozer thinks you are.

He is a brave soul, whose memory will always be in our hearts, and whose story will always provide comfort to others for a long time to come. Please know we will keep a candle lit for him, and send our love your way.

Many hugs,

Rene, Jim, Spirit Jerry and Wyatt Ray Dawg
