Anyone had lung surgery?
11 July 2020 - 3:09 pm

My dog Kaiserin has a lung mass of some kind. They cannot find any other cancer anywhere in her body (after ultrasound, CT scan and several physical exams).  They said it looks a bit odd with a fluid centre and circle around the outside - not what they were expecting to see on the CT scan. It is either in her lung or in the lining of her lung (the lining would be a better scenario). They cannot biopsy it because she had a bleed on monday (which alerted us to something was wrong) and they believe that a biopsy will cause another bleed. So her only chance is to remove the mass. They tell me she will likely qualify for a less invasive procedure where they can put two small cameras in to examine and locate the mass and then do a third incision to remove the mass. It is much less invasive than cutting directly into the chest cavity. So we find out more information on monday if this is possible and could maybe do the surgery on wednesday. I would love to hear from anyone who has had any kind of lung surgery or lung tumor removal on their dog - more to know how the recovery process was and how hard it was on the dog.

Wow that is so crazy, I'm so sorry you are dealing with cancer again. It's great you guys found it so quickly, and the vets have a plan. I know there's some relief in that but also worry. I hope with all my heart that they can do the easier surgery and get rid of that nasty bugger.

Here are two stories of Tripawds who have had lung surgeries. Not the kind you are describing, but the more invasive ones.

Orinoco (I believe he has gotten his wings but his people are on IG and I'm sure they would be glad to talk to you)

Jabba-Bear(I have no idea how to get in touch with his people these days).

I will put a call out on IG and Twitter to see if anyone can chime in with their experience OK? Stay tuned.

Hi there. I’m Orinoco’s mum, he did get his wings 35 months after his amputation and did have a lobe from his lung removed about 14 months after amputation, so not the whole lung

the recovery was easier and quicker than the amputation had been, the wound was on the same side as his amputation site so easy access (according to his surgeon).  I found he got really frustrated with been kept in one room, he wanted his freedom back So it didn’t hold him back.  Maybe because we had already gone through an amputation we were better prepared for it too

I never saw any drop in energy from his as a result of the surgery,  once his wound healed it was like it never happened.

Good luck!

Oh thank you so much seapee/Orinoco's mom - I don't know why I am so scared of a lung surgery when we got through an amputation but your post gives me so much hope that we can have the surgery and come out ok the other side! They are telling me losing part of the lung is the worst case scenario - and they think it might be in the lining of the lung - so we have hope she might not lose any lung! Thanks again for a positive story! I just needed to hear a positive story today!

No problem, our dogs are amazing. When I look back over my experience, Orinoco just dealt with everything that came his way and shook it off. I did a lot of worrying, and in hindsight he coped brilliantly.

You voiced that perfectly, thank you  sp_hearticon2  I wish I had the resilience of my pups and kitties... they truly are amazing and just take life as it comes. Be More Dog is a lot harder to do than it is to say sp_hearticon2  Work on it all the time though.

Hugs,

Jackie, Bo, Andy, Oscar, Phoebe, and the coolest feral tripawd kitty Huckleberry
