Our sweet 3 year old black lab was diagnosed with a grade 2 soft tissue sarcoma on his armpit. While we are very upset, we feel we are emotionally and physically prepared for the scheduled amputation (happening this Wednesday). However, we are somewhat at a loss as to what to do after…

Because the tumor is large and extends up the shoulder, our surgeon may not be able to get clean margins. We spoke with an oncologist today and they are recommending radiation after the surgery but it costs over $6,000! Has anyone had any experience with radiation vs. chemotherapy vs. homeopathic alternatives? I’ve read a bit about changing his diet, which we are certainly planning on doing, I’ve also read about metronomic chemotherapy as an alternative? Is radiation just an expensive inevitability here? It’s so hard to make the right choice!

What I’m really looking for is positivity combined with pragmatism. I want to do the best by Roscoe. Every day with Roscoe has been and is a gift in our eyes. Thanks so much!

Sincerely, Kristin & Family

I'm so sorry your pup has been diagnosed, he's such a young guy!

It does sound like you have a great vet team looking out for all of you. To answer your question about radiation therapy, yes, it is the standard treatment for a soft tissue sarcoma situation like this. According to Dr. Demian Dressler, author of the Dog Cancer Survival Guide (which we highly recommend getting, it's indispensable when coping with cancer)...

Although surgery is clearly important, there is an increasing move toward a combined treatment of surgery and radiation therapy for narrow or incomplete margins. Most commonly, radiation therapy is started two to three weeks after surgery. A course of radiation therapy after surgery can help to control the tumor locally and prevent recurrence from microscopic cells. Low and intermediate grades of STS may really benefit from this combined approach: 75% of afflicted dogs are still alive, five years later without tumor regrowth. STS is one of the few malignancies associated with five-year control rates, which justifies the extra expense and involvement of adding radiation treatments in the minds of owners who choose it.

According to Dressler, STS does not respond well to chemotherapy, it's mainly used as palliative care to delay metastasis in high-grade cases. Metronomics can be used as an alternative to radiation therapy, but dogs who used it had a recurrance rate at about 14 months. "Clearly these statistics are not as impressive as those associated with post-surgical radiation treatments" he goes on to say.

Of course, money is a concern and you shouldn't feel terrible about it, we've all been there. Yes, radiation therapy is expensive and it's also not widely available around the country, that's pretty cool it's even an option for you guys. But if the money part is stressing you out, talk to your vet to see how they can help. We also have this Financial Resources information that you can check out.

I'm pretty certain that a holistic approach isn't commonly used for soft tissue sarcomas (can't recall anyone here who has), but if you wanted to investigate it as an option, check out this directory of holistic vets to find one near you.

I hope this helps, please let us know what we can do to make this easier for all of you. And do check out Jerry's Required Reading List for more tips about just coping with amputation in general. Stay tuned for more feedback from this great community!

I have to say right off the bat...please post more pictures when you can! The avatar picture is adorable!!!

As always, Jerry has given great advice. Just know we are all here to support you and no one understands the emotions involved in this journey like we do!

The bliss of being a dog is they don't worry about a thing! Being in the now with their humans is all that matters!

As far as the surgery and recovery, every dog is different. My Happy Hannah had a rough recovery...whimpering...crying..restless...for days and nights! She had no problem adjusting to three legs right from the start though. So e dogs seem to sail through recovery. Some dogs take days before they can get up on their own and take a few steps.

Non slip scatter rugs for traction if you jave hardwoods, raised food bowls...just a couple of wuick tips.

Point being, stay connected to us and let us guide you through should you have any concerns.

Oh...and keep lots of CHOCOLATE on hand! It helps!!

Sending love to all!

Howdy and welcome!

Awww . . . black labs are my weakness and Roscoe is absolutely beautiful!!

I really don't have anything to add to your queries about radiation, etc., but please know that we're here for you. When no one else understands, we do.

Hi all!

Thank you so much for your kind responses! Jerry, you are awesome! That's exactly the kind of info I'm looking for. I am actually waiting for my Cancer Survival Guide to come in the mail today! I am leaning towards the radiation even if it is expensive simply because it sounds worth it for a 5+ year survival rate. We will have to wait and see what the pathology report says...I am trying my best to remain very positive!

Sally, the non-slip rugs are a great idea! I think I'm going to run to Walmart and grab a few for our hallways! Roscoe is so food drive, he would never forgive me if I didn't get a raised food bowl so he can chow down 🙂 I am so nervous about him being in pain but my surgeon says that he has some sort of device they leave in to send pain meds directly to the wound. I will definitely be sleeping with him in his bed, post surgery until he feels better 🙂 Also, my mom flew into town to help out!!

Pam, thank you so much for your kind words. Roscoe really is a handsome devil hehe It looks like your Harmony had those same beautiful brown eyes! Maybe they are distant relatives 😉

I can't tell you how happy I am that this forum exists! A friend of a friend form my hometown on Long Island recommended it to me! Thank you all! Roscoe will be heading in for his surgery tomorrow. Send him good vibes!! xoxo

Sidenote: I'm awful with technology, how do I post more photos!! haha!
