Being told your 12-year old dog needs to lose a leg because of cancer is not easy. And amputation is not right for every situation. But as today's Tripawd Tuesday shows, dogs like Mayhem who are good candidates for surgery really can thrive after limb loss. Here's what his mom Melissa has to say about how her boy is handling life on three legs.

- He's a terror on three legs! It was a little tough the first few days, but he's adapted and happy!
What are your Tripawd's favorite things to do?
- Walks, naps, and eating snacks!
Is there any special gear that helped or helps your Tripawd?
- We LOVE our Ruffwear harnesses.
If you went through amputation surgery recovery with your animal, what did you think would happen after surgery? Did your worst fears happen? How did you cope?
- He's doing well. He had some tough first nights, but he's doing well now.
What is the biggest lesson you learned from your Tripawd?
- We can adapt.
What is your best advice to someone who is about to go through amputation with their pet, or someone who is thinking of adopting a Tripawd?
- They're just like any other dog--lots of love to give
