My eight year old Presa Canario, Aslan, just had his left back leg amputated a week ago to hopefully cure him of a moderate grade, soft tissue sarcoma. I think he is recovering reasonably well, but have no idea what to expect. Additionally, his CCL on his back right leg is partially torn, and he now has to undergo TPLO in a week to stabilize the knee, since it will now have to support all his weight on his rear. Does anyone have any experience with large dogs and recovery? I don't know how much to push him or what to expect. Thanks everyone.

Hi Shannon and Asian, welcome. I'm sorry to hear you're dealing with amputation, but rest assured, I'm gonna bet that Asian is rockin' his recovery and will do the same for the TPLO surgery too. I hope you don't mind but I moved your post here, since these discussions spotlight giant breed and senior doggies, who are such big inspawrations! Poke around this area and you will find lots of comfort, guaranteed.
The collective experience of this community can help you in the coming weeks and again when he has the surgery. We've had quite a few Tripawds, especially larger ones, go through it so search for "TPLO" like this and you'll find lots of tips and tricks that will ease your fears. Murphy's story is especially inspawrational.
