Hi, my dog Samus just went through front leg amputation and she's been steadily getting better but the last day or two she's been doing a very painful whine when she's trying to settle down. Have any others gone through this? She doesn't have any trouble when I move or stretch her legs but it seems really painful when she goes from standing to laying down. I'm getting her into the vet to see if there's a problem but my gut tells me it might be muscle soreness? I thought I would ask everyone who's gone through this before if they've had the same issue.

Hey I'm so glad you posted here! Sorry I missed you in the Tripawds Chat today.

11 days is not a long time after surgery. Tell us more about what her activity is like throughout the day. Are your floors slippery? Is she playing with other dogs? How long have her walks been?

Yes, muscle soreness is not uncommon especially early on and especially with larger front leg amputees. Have her do a lot of couch surfing for a few days and let your vet know what's going on. A longer round of pain management is probably necessary, so connect with them to make sure she is more comfortable. Gentle massage (like massaging a baby) around her neck and shoulders can help too. Watch for her response, she may look back when you hit a sore spot.

Also please consider taking advantage of the Tripawds Rehab Reimbursement program. The Tripawds Foundation can pay for your first rehab visit and it's an excellent way to know how to keep her activity in check so she doesn't experience soreness and injury. If you'd like help finding a practice please let us know.

We look forward to learning all about her!

Do you mind me asking how your dog is doing now? We have a Great Pyrenees/Malamute mix that is also facing front leg amputation. She weighs 190 pounds and is 7 years old. We have not yet scheduled the surgery, but are seriously considering it. We are trying to gather all the information that we can. How large is your baby?
