Cyrus just had his back right leg amputated due to bone cancer. Fortunately, there were not any traces in his lungs on the x-ray. It has been a little over 48 hours since the surgery and there is still light blood leaks and bruising on his belly. I believe this is common with the timeframe, but is tough to look at! Why can't he talk? =) He is his normal self with a great appetite, attention to his surroundings, and hopping along with ease. Can anyone with this experience let me know how long it took for the slight bleeding to stop?

Fluid buildup and drainage can occur for a while, so don't be too alarmed. But if it looks like pure blood and persists be sure to tell your vet.
A little leakage this soon shouldn't be a concern. Hopefully Dr. Pam can confirm ... Thanks again, keep us posted.

I agree with Jerry, a little seepage is to be expected, also some "pouches" of fluid may develop. They should go away within a week.
As Jerry said, if it is bright red, frank blood, call the vet. If it's a pinkish, or yellowish clear fluid, it's normal drainage.

Sounds normal that soon after amputation. Expect bruises to develop in the next few days as blood is also leaking under the skin. If it is a steady drip of bright red blood then I would call your vet.
What kind of gog is Cyrus? Is he older? Let us know how he does!

Cyrus is an 11 year old german shepherd/pitbull mix at about 50 pounds. He is hard to judge because he has never really shown pain. His incision is still a grey area to me as far as what is normal and what is not. There is a little blood and fluid around the stitches, especially after moving from laying down for extended periods of time. I was nervous and called the doc and they assured me it was normal. The surgery was Wendsday afternoon. I am confident he is okay because he is showing his normal personality. Thank you for your support and experienced stories.

I didn't have any drainage problems, but all the advice sounds right on to me. The fact that your personality is normal is WONDERFUL news and a sure pawsitive. Keep us posted and remember to rest a lot these next few weeks...mom too.
