My 13 year old cat was bitten by a dog two months ago and suffered a broken femur. Turns out she has hypothyroid, so her bones are brittle. She had surgery to try and stabilize it. Yesterday the pins were removed from her leg, the bone has not healed. The vet suggested we give her a week to see if she puts any weight on it. If not then amputate. I am sure that the end will be amputate. My question is do we put this old cat thru another big surgery and remove the leg? More pain? Is she too old to adapt? I am having mixed thoughts on what to do. Does anyone have a cat this old that has been able to adapt? Just want to do the right thing for her.

Welcome! Your future forum posts will not require moderation.
Our first Tripawds cat blogger Fang is over 13 years old. Check the full list of tri-kitty bloggers to find others and feel free to start your own. Hopefully other feline folks will provide more feedback soon.
From all the stories we've heard here though, the vast majority of cats recover quickly and adapt well to life on three legs. Best wishes! Please keep us posted.

I'm sorry to hear of your cat being bitten by a dog. That's one of my greatest fears for my cats.
Here is a forum post from Hattie about her 15 year old cat's amputation. Age was not a factor but Jerry had some problems with the some medication. tripawds.com/forums/treatment-and-recovery/9-months-post-amputation-update/
There have been some other older cats here who had amputations. Age is not an issue but the cat's overall health is an issue when it comes to a major surgery. Most vets would not recommend an amputation if a cat was unhealthy.
As for adapting to the amputation. Cats are very resilient and manage very well to living with 3 legs.
I hope this helps.
