Last summer, my 10 lb. pomeranian (Ernie) was attacked by a racoon who bit his back leg, resulting in a very bad break. We had to amputate the leg and Ernie has done very well until just recently. We go for 2-3 mile walks almost every day and Ernie still loves to play and chase after toys.
About a week ago, he chased a squirrel and something happened to his remaining back leg. In describing it to my vet, she said it sounded like his knee had gone out - something called "luxating patella." He is nine years old and has never had any problems with his knees (patella) before.
Following the first episode, he seemed to recover within just a few minutes and was again walking very normally. Over the course of the last week, it has happened 3-4 more times, most recently this evening.
Since he only has one back leg, I know it has to take much more strain. Has anyone else had this problem with their tripawd?
Thanks!
Sorry we missed you in the chat. Here's a post about Max, who needed multiple surgeries after becoming a tripawd:

Sounds like a trick knee. My dog's a rear amp but he hasn't had any problems (yet) with his back leg. Is Ernie in a lot of pain when it happens?

TATE ~ Forever in our hearts.
No he doesn't seem to have pain for the most part.
Two or three times he has "yipped" and sat down. The other times he just sat down without a yip. Within 30 seconds, each time, he's back up, walking well and seemingly unconcerned.
I do not think it's serious unless it becomes frequent. Since it's never happened before and has now happened probably six times in the last 10 days, it's somewhat concerning. Somehow, I think he injured or pulled something when he chased that squirrel. Hopefully, it will get better with time, instead of worse.
We hope it gets better too! Hopefully confinement and rest will do the trick. Please keep us posted.
