We visited this site several times when faced with Lily’s cancerous leg and I would like to pass along our experience.

The vet told us she would be jumping half as high as she used to and two months after the amputation she would be running around happy as can be. Bullshit.
That may be true for a young cat but Lily was a healthy outdoor alpha female of 13 years. That translates to 60 something in human years and it took her much longer to recover.

It has snow been six months and she can jump up on a chair but that is about as high as she can go, no more going over a six foot fence. She was depressed for at least two months but catnip helped, she has always loved the stuff. Her stump muscle was invoked whenever she had her left neck scratched and when she got up to move she was very crooked/twisted in the direction of the amputation. She still is for the first couple of steps even today but once she gets going she can be surprisingly fast.

There were a lot of feelings of guilt and concern along the way but now we are happy to have her with us and she is happy too. She is still outside much of the time and still thinks she is a toughie occasionally chasing off a neighbor cat or swatting at her sister.
A few drops of Rescue Remedy in her water bowl may have helped, my wife thinks so. The catnip definitely did help and so did frequent brushing and a lot of neck scratching where she no longer had a leg to help herself with those pesky itches.
It took six months to fully recover but now she seems like the cat we have known for all these years, healthy & happy.

I assume your Lily is a rear leg amputee. Although she can't jump as high she is still alive and feisty enough to swat her sister. Good going Lily!

By the way I took my kitty Mona in for a chiropractic treatment to keep her in alignment. I think it helped her. Here's a photo of her session.

Thanks for letting us know about your use of Rescue Remedy.

Thank you Luda for sharing your story, sorry it's taken me so long to read up on your experience.

I'm really sorry the vet put your expectations too high. You are right, for a younger cat, they bounce back even faster than dogs do. But when you have a mature kitty, there are most definitely other considerations that affect recovery time and mobility. I've been meaning to write about this topic -- discussing recovery expectations with your vet -- so thank you for that reminder.

But I'm so happy to hear she's getting around and enjoying her life now. Cat veterinary medicine and rehabilitation therapy is just now in its infancy, and by making the courageous decision to give your kitty a chance at more great years, you are helping others to know what to expect.

Do you have any photos you'd like to share? Here's a post on how to add images. We'd love to see 'em!

Welcome Lily! Thank you for sharing such a valuable first hand experience for others facing this journey. There are "averages" and general" expectations for recovery. But the true reality is every cat is different...every dog is different...and each one has their own unique recovery and adaptation.

You've explained so well how, even though Lily isn't doing everything she did before, it doesn't matter to her. She has adjusted to her new norm and replaced jumping over 6' fences for loving neck scratches and ge tle brushing...and lots of catnip! Yeah, that's a happy kitty!

You know we have to have pictures, right? way-cool

Happy Six Mo th Ampuversary Lily!!!clap

Hugs to all!

PS....Mona, just looking at how relaxed you are, relaxes me!!

Happy Hannah had a glorious additional bonus time of over one yr & two months after amp for osteo! She made me laugh everyday! Joined April's Angels after send off meal of steak, ice cream, M&Ms & deer poop!
