Hi all,

cobalt three legged running after amputationImage Enlarger

So sorry I haven't written in a while, but we've been to busy playing with Cobalt!  It's been nearly three weeks since her amputation, and she's getting along as though she's always had three legs-well, almost.  She'll occasionally do a face plant if she gets going too fast or fall over when she tries to lie down on the side that doesn't have a leg anymore.  It's one of those things where you're afraid to laugh even though you're cracking up inside!  All in all though, it's like many of you have said, she has adapted very quickly.  She's also eating us out of house and home, trying to gain back the 10 pounds she lost over the past two months.

The biopsy from the lump on her groin came back negative, just a swollen lymph node.  I guess we're paranoid any time we feel a bump on her now!  Her incision is healing nicely with tufts of hair coming back here and there.  It reminds me of that time on Cheers where Cliff tried to grow a beard…

cobalt dog and e-collar after amputation

Funny thing happened last week.  The day before she was supposed to get the cone off we took her for a walk.  As she jumped into the van her cone caught the door and tore right off of her head!  I guess she got to decide when it was time to remove the cone.  It's been great watching her do things she use to do before like getting out her ball, chewing on her bone, and trying to figure out how to scratch when she doesn't have a leg to balance on!  She used to give us her paw when she was sitting, and we were afraid she would never be able to do it again.  However, if she has her balance right she'll lift it up and balance on her hind legs just fine.  It brought tears to our eyes the first time she did it!

Well, that's about all for now here are a couple more photos, thanks again all for your support through this process!

No, thank you! These are the kind of updates that make this site so helpful to others. Cobalt looks so happy in your photos, and we're happy to hear she's doing so well. Laugh

I agree, she looks so happy, as only a pain free dog can.  Love the cone pics.  When I first saw it, I assumed she had managed to tear it off intentionally.

Hope you guys have many more happy days of playing ahead of you.

I think she is actually smiling in the photo when the cone is off!!  Glad to hear she is coming along and the lymph node was negative, yeah!! Continue to do well.
