Hi. My name is Carolyn & my 11 month old puppy had her left rear amputated on 3/30/2011. She was accidentally hit by a car in a parking lot. I am having trouble with a place on her incision not healing up. She is still on antibiotics. Also, how long should she stay on pain medicine. She was on Tramadol & Remadyl. I only give her the Remadyl now but I am concerned. Can she become addicted to it?

Hi Carolyn.  So sorry about such a young pup, but have no fear she will bounce back and adapt .  You'll one day wonder if she ever had four legs!  Typically, it is aobut two weeks on the Rimadyl and pain medication,  but they all heal and recover at their own pace.  Don't fret at this point, just continue to follow the advice of your vet.

My guess would be that as long as there is concern with the incision, she will be on the antibiotics and a pain reliever/anti inflamatory.

Welcome! We were trying to answer your questions earlier in the chat room but you left.

Rimadyl is an NSAID with no addictive qualities. Tramadol is the one that is tough to kick after long term use. Most dogs are off the pain meds after 14 days or so.

What do you mean by "not healing up" and what does your vet say? Is the wound open? Staples or stitches, and have they been removed yet? If the wound is open is it seeping, or does it smell bad? Is it warm to the touch? These things could indicate infection. But without infection, and if the rest of the incision is healing, it may just need more time. Some vets recommend using Neosporin, others have suggested Aloe. Please consult with your vet, and keep us posted. Let us know your dog's name too!

Welcome to the group, like admin says , watch for bad smell and redness or being too warm to the touch. If infection develops your vet may need to put a drain in the incision, and give some stronger antibiotics, but that should be the worst of it. As everyone else said, in a few weeks you will begin to wonder if your pup ever had 4 legs to begin with. Please keep us posted.
