I am either cursed or my husband Mike is watching over us. Brody had his amputation 3 weeks ago this past Friday and his sutures were removed on Wednesday, so on Friday morning I decided to take him for his first walk around the block. We were 2 doors away from the house when he decided to run, as I attempted to slow him down he slipped out of his collar as he has lost weight, and ran up the street faster than I ever saw him run before. By the time I got my car keys to go catch him he was no where to be found. Someone called and said he was about a mile away from my house so I hurried to find him but he was gone by the time I got there. My friend Val then spotted him up the hill a few blocks away in her yard running in the woods. Val, my sons and I looked for him but we could not find him. I had contacted the local police, and 3 hours later Officer Munley and DPW workers had him about 2 miles from my house. Another officer said he had spotted the dog an hour prior but didn't stop because the dog was was running so fast, there was no way this was the 3 legged Boxer he was looking for. Brody was jumping around and happy when my son went to pick him up. I guess when the Dr's at Cornell University said he he could live a normal life on 3 legs they were not kidding. I am now sure that amputation was the right decision because he is back to the same fast running trouble maker that he was before. Just hope he has as much luck with his Chemo. As I walked into my house I heard over the Police Scanner that Brody the 3 legged Boxer was home safe with his mom and his Boxer sister Shelby. Now I need a sedative because my nerves are shot.
Phew! We're so glad Brody is home safe. Now, to teach him he can't be running around like that yet. He may need some time to recover from that sprint! It's time to focus on rehab and rebuilding strength. Check out these starter exercises , read Loving Life On Three Legs , or consider taking advantage of the Maggie Moo Fund for Tripawd Rehab...after you have a long talk with Brody. Take it easy there buddy!
