We found out yesterday that Marley does not have OS but a rare soft tissue cancer called Histiocytic Sarcoma---I have been reading quite a bit about Histiocytic Sarcoma and Malignant Histiocytosis (MH). Everything i read about symptoms point to a localized Histiocytic Sarcoma which they say IF caught early enough is CURABLE--MH has a much worse prognosis--
We speak to the oncologist tomorrow--Anyone familiar with this type of cancer ? We have our fingers crossed---

Well, getting the diagnosis narrowed down is a good start. Our paws are crossed that if it has to be either, it's HS.
We don't know anything about it except what we found online:

You are right about malignant histiocytosis being a bad thing. It is more common in certain breeds like Bernese Mt Dogs and Goldens, so I hope that she doesn't have that! I would think that they would have found evidence of that tumor in the lymph node or liver and both of those were clean. Histiocytic sarcoma is also rare and I have not treated these myself so I would see what the oncologist has to say.
I am so glad that you are getting through the post-op period pretty well.

Our preliminary diagnosis after the amputation was a low grade fibrosarcoma and clean lymph nodes. And then a week later, the pathologist says he needs more time because he wants to show it to some other people. So we're still kind of waiting also to see what's going on. I'm so glad you're doing well though!

We just found out that our 7 year old chocolate lab has histiocytic scarcoma in her lung (very large mass) and it has spread to her spinal cord (inoperable). It was only because of the spinal tumor that we even noticed any symptoms. The came on overnight - literally- and progressed quickly. She is now on pain meds and prednisone and doing better neurologically. We will meet with an oncologist tomorrow, but surgery in not an option. We are also looking into nutritional supplements and changing her diet to high protein to boost her immune system. Her prognosis in not good, 3 to 6 months with chemo and radiation, but we are hoping for the best

Liz, I am sorry for the dx. Hope that the oncologist tomorrow will layout a sound treatment plan, and give you a better prognosis.

Be sure to check out our post with complete details about Jerry's canine cancer diet, before and after lung metastsis. We also believe the metronomic protocol he was put on at the time his lung mets were discovered helped him greatly.

Hi – My black lab Brady was diagnosed with cancer back in December 2009. He had his amputation in January 2010. After his amputation, the pathology came back as histiosarcoma. His cancer appeared to have been localized to his right front leg. We did 1 round of chemo for safe measure. He is now 1 ½ years post cancer diagnosis and almost 1 ½ years post amputation and diagnosis of histiosarcoma and is doing remarkably well. At this point, there has been no signs of the cancer metastasizing. He has adjusted to life on 3 legs. He is his usual self, minus the 4th leg!! He will even chase the neighborhood cats around! Good luck and keep us updated!

I just wanted to tell you what we're doing. Our Golden was diagnosed July 23rd with internal Malignant Histiocytic Sarcoma. He underwent a splenectomy and is on day 5 of a new drug called Neoplasene. No clinical analysis has yet been conducted, but from what I understand it's in the process. However, there are HUNDREDS of case studies where dogs with 3-4 months to live have survived for years.
Of course we understand the odds, but if we go down we want to go down fighting. We opted out of chemo because of the terrible negative side effects that some dogs experience and the fact that with HS it's not recommended because of it's low to non-existent success rate.
I encourage you and anyone with doggy cancer to check out http://www.buck.....als.net. Print ALL 4 documents listed under (1.) and read them carefully and completely. Make an educated choice for your family memeber.
It must be adminstered by a vet, so we found a holsitic/conventional vet that has 6 years of exerperience with the treatment protocol. She also had a Golden with Indy's exact diagnosis that survived for 4 YEARS after his splenectomy. People are of course entitled to opinions and experiences vary, but it's worth at least considering.
I also came across a similar drug called Avemar last night that's being used with some success overseas in Europe and India. I know nothing about it right now, but I intend to learn what I can.
