My 113lb great pyrenees has been diagnosed with osteoscacoma and needs his left rear leg amputated. Has anyone been through this experience with a dog of this size? Will he be able to acclimate and function without assistance? Anyone have any recommendations?

Welcome and thanks for joining, your future posts won't need approval and will appear immediately. I'm so sorry about the diagnosis, I know it's devastating to hear.

You've come to the right place, we are here to help. Many dogs are even bigger than yours and do great after amputation surgery. Check out our "Size and Age Matters" Discussion Forum, you'll find lots of great examples.

What's your pup's name?

Now, how do your vets feel about your dog being a candidate for surgery? Does he have any pre-existing conditions?

For now, be sure to check out Jerry's Required Reading List , it will put a lot of your fears to rest. Others will jump in too, so stay tuned and if you'd like, come over to the Tripawds Chat Room, we're in there now. Just scroll down and you'll see us.

His name is Sebastian, we're going in tomorrow to speak with our vet but got xray confirmation today and spoke briefly with the vet. We'll have a more detailed analysis tomorrow.

He doesn't have any other issues, aside from being 9 years 6 months old. ;)

Well that's great to hear Sebastian is overall in great shape! Even his age isn't that big of a deal, we've had older dogs.

You'll learn a lot tomorrow. Be sure to ask a lot of questions and take something to write with.

We're still in the chat, come on over!

Welcome to you, and Sebastian..... sorry you have to be here, but there is no better place to be on earth than here, to help you through this new journey. Great Pyrenees are such big, beautiful dogs, and I have been quite fortunate to have known several in my lifetime. I just mostly want to say, best wishes to you and Sebastian, and to any upcoming decisions you have to make. We all know that it is never easy to make these kind of decisions. But help and support are always here for anything, and everything, dealing with amputation surgery, and the ugly " c " word.

Keep us updated on everything, and keeping you in my thoughts....

Welcome.
I can't help directly with the size question, my rear leg amp was a 17 lb pug, but we have lots of giant breed dogs here.

My local pal Cemil is a 150 lb Anatolian Shepard front amp, he is more than 5 years past his amp for OSA. He doesn't get as far as he used to, no doubt the years have taken a toll, but he continues to have good quality of life.

I hope your vet consult goes well, I'll be looking for an update.
