Hi everyone, I have a puppy that lost his back right paw/foot during whelping. My vet gave me the option to amputate. I would appreciate thoughts and experiences on this. I’d like to be as informed as possible before I make any decisions. Much appreciated!

SUPER smart of you to ask questions before amputating. If only the paw is gone, it sounds like a prosthetic might be an option if you can invest the time and resources into getting him to use one. It would be ideal to have a veterinary orthopedic surgeon evaluate him. Check out our prosthetics articles for more research.

For a German Shepherd, it can make a huge difference in quality of life over time. You won't see the effects of life on three for a while in a dog, but eventually all pay the price for a compensated gait. A prosthetic reduces the impact of limb loss and for the right candidate it's a game changer.
