hi,

we recently rescued a puppy Bull Terrier who was found dumped with a broken back right leg. There were two breaks, he had surgery on the fractured femur and pins were inserted. This operation was not successful and his leg was amputated. The doctors think Gus had been hit by a car based on the damage.

6 weeks post surgery, he was still in pain and we noticed that he was resisting putting weight on his left rear leg. We took him back to the hospital and they are suggesting a femoral head and neck ostectomy.

Has anyone gone through this? Will he be able to cope with a compromised single back limb? This poor guy is still a puppy and most of his life has been dealing with pain.

I could use some advice on what to expect.

thanks,

Ben

Hi Ben and Gus! Your future posts won't need to wait for approval so post away.

I'm so sorry that you guys are dealing with this situation. You are amazing and so compassionate for wanting to help Gus!

As you know, an FHO on a Tripawd isn't a small thing. But the good news is that many Tripawds have gone through a remaining leg surgery and done well. It takes very careful management during recovery, and an excellent rehab team, and patience, however. So, if you can be good about following recovery protocols and your clinic can support you in that way, and they have on-site rehab or at least a practice they work closely with, Gus should do fine. I would want at least one more ortho vet surgeon opinion to be certain this is the way to go.

Meanwhile is Gus on any sort of pain relief?

Thanks for the quick reply and the support. I have checked with another surgeon; this is going to be tough but we are committed to following up with therapy and rehab. He is on Gabapentin until his surgery later this week.

Glad to hear he's on pain control, and that you've gotten another opinion. Is it from a board-certified surgeon? Just wonderin.

Be sure to check out the link I posted for stories about dogs who have gone through remaining leg surgeries.
