Has anyone's Tripod needed surgery on one of their three remaining legs?  My 9 month of hound mix (who was born without a back leg) has a trick knee on her other back leg that is preventing her from being able walk.  I spoke to an Orthopod, who suggests surgery, but I'm concerned with recovery.  Has anyone been through this before?

Hi Millie's Mama, thanks for joining. Your future posts won't need approval so post away.

Yep, this has happened to many Tripawds families. Here's an article that may help calm your fears:

Remaining Limb Surgery Recovery for Tripawds

My first question is, is the vet who recommended it a board-certified orthopedic veterinarian? And did he mention how many surgeries he's done like this on three-legged dogs? Also, have you gotten a second opinion? That's what I would do next before proceeding. In the meantime, make sure Millie has good pain relief going on and isn't overdoing her activity. Did the vet prescribe anything for her pain?

I know I have more questions than answers right now but the more information we have the better insight we can give you to make a decision that's right for her and you. Stay tuned, others will certainly chime in soon.

Didn't Izzy just have cruciate repair (Izzysmomma I think is her user name)?  And Daisy did too - her mom jumped onto a thread titled something like cruciate repair on a 13 y.o. dog.

Otis - 106 pound lab/Dane mix, lost his right front leg to osteosarcoma on Febuary 9, 2016.  Four rounds of carboplatin completed in April, 2016.  Lung mets August 25, 2016.  Said goodbye too soon on September 4, 2016.   Lost his adopted sister, Tess, suddenly on October 9, 2016. likely due to hemangiosarcoma.

Wherever they are, they are together.

Yeah Christine, and Murphy (Kathi) also had surgery on remaining legs. Hopefully, they'll chime in shortly.

So hes, it's absolutely doable, just takes a lot of additional care and rest and confinement.

Millie's avatar picture is precious! Love that mug!

Stay connected and we'll nelp you through the recovery if surgery is necessary. But in the meantime, do check into some more opinions as Jerry suggested.

Lots of hugs!
