How Much Exercise?

My Irish Water Spaniel was born with a deformed front leg (later amputated) so he's only known life on three legs. My vets recommended short walks (obvious for a pup) and said twenty minutes maximum. He's now ten months old and energetic. His back undulates as he runs and he travels on his chin when he runs too fast.

My problem, do I let him have fun and run more or am I stacking up [arthritic] problems for later life?

I've just ordered a float jacket. He's a water dog and heads straight for the river. I'm sure swimming will help but anybody got ideas/ experience for on land?

Swimming is indeed some of the best exercise, but you'll still need to watch for signs of exertion. That Float Coat will certainly help. For more terrestrial activities, focus on core strengthening exercises, stretching, and massage. More frequent shorter walks are definitely recommended. Watch our video interviews from CARE for more tripawd exercise and stretching tips.

Short answer: Every dog is different. If your pup sits on a walk, he's gone to far. Follow his lead and always take along plenty of water!

What's your dog's name? You can upload your user avatar photo from the link in your forums profile, see button at top right.
