John Wayne, the Australian Cattle Dog, now living in Portland, Oregon (recently rescued from Heart of the Valley Animal Shelter in Bozeman, Montana) is going snowshoeing! Yesterday his Ruffwear boots and boot liners arrived (www.ruffwear.com) and they are available individually! We tried them on and went for a walk with our four legged best friend Otis and his Mom (Otis is hosting this over several night adventure!) We have to snowshoe in about a mile and a half from the road. Am wondering if anyone has put a pack on their tripawd, brand name, how it works out, etc....I think we are getting John Wayne a Ruffwear Cloud Chaser jacket, just for protection (his rear left leg was amputated on October 16, 2008) and added warmth. Adding a pack would make a great ensemble to his bandanna, boots, and cowboy hat. Thanks much for your help!

Jerry used a Ruff Wear pack before his amputation. I'd be concerned about loading John Wayne down with the weight of a pack ... he's already bearing the extra weight of his body on one less leg.

I forget which leg JW lost, but keep in mind dogs carry 70% of their weight on their front legs, so I'd especially think twice if he's missing a front leg now.

Thanks very much. As you suggested, I will hold off on a pack for John Wayne. His left rear leg is the one removed by the vet at Heart of the Valley Animal Shelter in Bozeman on October 16, 2008. Out of curiosity, on another matter, our vet suggested some soft chew glucosamine for JW, which he is supposed to eat daily...just got a 2 pound tub and he does not like them at all...do others give their dogs glucosamine to help/prevent joint issues? Thanks for everything. John Wayne and Pudfree!

I use a product called GLC-5000 on all of my greyhounds. Calamity got it before she had her surgery, as do all of mine. I ran across this product at a veterinarian conference many years ago & have been sold on it. I take the human form and can really tell a difference! I use the equine powder product simply for the cost factor with 5 dogs here, just a small amount for each dog morning & night sprinkled right on their food.

I think any dogs who leads an active lifestyle can benefit from a glucosamine supplement!

Janie & Calamity - Morgan, Trigger, Kade & Munchie too!

Hi! Thanks very much for your suggestion. We will check it out. Certainly the taste, if any, of the powder can be masked by food or "gravy"....We appreciate your help.  Pudfree and John Wayne

Hi Pudfree. I had a slight case of hip displaysia before my amp, and when I started getting creaky after my amp, ny pawrents gave me Synflex, a glucosamine supplement. I swear, it made such a huge difference. It comes in a liquid form that tastes like beef, and I always ate whatever they mixed it into. You can even put it in water. Good stuff, give it a try.
