Hello, my name is Effy and I foster animals through Aggieland Humane Society. I am also studying to be a vet at Texas A&M university in College Station.
I have had one foster dog with an amputated back leg(Finley, shown in my avatar) that had gangrene and half a leg with exposed bone when she came into the shelter. I had her for about a month until she could fully recover and she quickly got adopted after the recovery.
I have just been notified that I will be getting another foster dog with a freshly amputated back leg on Thursday and I was wondering if any one could give me advice as far as when it would be ok for her to go to the beach.
I have a current foster dog that had puppies 9 weeks ago (all have been adopted already) and I am holding her until her milk dries up so she can get spayed and adopted. We go to the beach every weekend because she is a lab mix and loves the sand and water, and I was wondering when it would be ok for my new foster dog to join us. I understand she needs time to recover from the surgery and I was just wondering if walking on sand would be difficult/ impossible for her or if there is something I can buy to help her get around on the sand. I was also wondering if the seawater would help her wound heal and her other legs strengthen. Any advice would help!
Hi Effy, welcome and .... GO AGGIES!
Thanks for all you do to help these pups, you are such a great advocate for them. You're going to make a great vet! We're glad you joined us and look forward to following your adventures. Definitely want to see some photos of your dogs too!
To answer your question about the new amputee and going to the beach....most people wait at least a month, sometimes longer, before attempting something like that with a new Tripawd, and that's only if the dog doesn't have other issues like obesity. Walking on sand is very difficult and exhausting unless it's hard-packed the entire way. While it's great for dogs who are in good condition, the new pup is really not that far out of surgery and although I'm not a vet, I wouldn't do it until you know that she's capable.
We have lots of tips about rehab and keeping a Tripawd fit, check 'em out:

Our book Loving Life On Three Legs is another great resource, it's focused on diet, exercise and fitness for three-legged dogs.

P.S. Our Tripawds Fundraising Policy requires us to remove direct fundraising appeals for monetary donations. We are happy to share links for the humane society though, and have added one to your post. Thank for understanding.
