Hello! We just adopted our sweet Ducky on Friday. She is 9 weeks old, and the shelter thinks she is a lab/border collie mix. Ducky was born with a deformed front left leg, and had the amputation done on Wednesday. (So, she is 4 days post-op.)

We bring her into our home with a 5 yr old cat and a 1yr old, very energetic, hound mix. So far, our older dog is doing wonderful with her, and she with him. He gets a bit too energetic when in the yard, so we are having to watch that carefully. Ducky is all puppy, and is moving around great. Today she has started adventuring around the main level of our house, and has even learned how to get up and down the steps to go outside. Honestly, my biggest concern is how to get her to slow down and not overdo it.

Hi and welcome! Thanks for adopting Ducky, she’s a lucky dog!

Yes it’s tricky to keep a young dog calm. Right now you really want to limit her activity though so she can heal and get stronger. Keeping her in a safe confined area of your home is the best way to do that.

To keep her entertained you’ll need to get creative with interactive brain games and activities that challenge her mind and not so much her body. Here are some links with info to check out that can help:

This is also a good time to consider establishing a relationship with a canine rehab therapist! These folks can evaluate her and let you know how to help her stay strong and injury free for life! Raising one four legger and one three legger will pose unique challenges that will at times put her at risk of going beyond her capabilities to keep up with her sibling. A therapist can explain how to avoid that based on her breed type. The best part is the Tripawds Foundation can pay for your first rehab visit !

We are so glad you joined us and look forward to following along with her adventures.
