Hi,here's Niko's history. Niko is a 10 yr old poodle with a heart of gold. This little dog loves his 9 yr old boy they're best of friends! About 6 weeks ago Niko was with his best friend when he wondered away on our farm and got in with our boarding horses. His vision is very poor and he was kicked around like a soccer ball. Our standard poodle my son and myself ran to help him . Thankfully he only suffered a front leg break. We are at about 5-6 weeks out and there has been no healing,we think his age. He's been on calcium supplement, several x rays etc. So now Niko is taking his splint off! I'm worried about his mental health, honesty I feel like he's telling me he's done trying the splint. I'm taking him back to the vet in about a hour so I'm just scared. I think little Niko will do better than me. Thanks for listening.
Welcome to Tripawds, your future posts will not have to wait for approval.
I'm sorry to hear about Niko's accident, and that his leg isn't healing. Was amputation the plan if the break didn't heal? It is not uncommon for amputation when a break can't heal. Is Niko a mini poodle?
Let us know what you decide at the vet today. I just adopted my second Tripawd who lost a rear leg after a bad break. Based on the pictures I've seen of my girl with a cast on her leg she is much happier now.

Also, I moved your post here to 'beyond cancer' since you are dealing with an accident.

Awww...sorry sweet Niko is dealing with this.
I'm certainly no vet. Your vet is the best one to assess is Niko is a good candidate for amputation. It is major surgery and now without risk.
Unfortunately, we see amputation as a solution quite often when broken legs do not heal. Me.bers will have gone through months of more surgeries, more pain and, often, infections, before coming to the decision to amputate. As long as your vet thinks Niko ks a good candidate, there is no reason to believe that Niko will not have a great recovery and be free of a painful leg that no longer serves him. He can get on with living life to the fullest and enjoy being with his boy!
We are all here for you no matter what you decide. Update us when you can. We'd love to see pictures of Niko and her pack!
Hugs!

Happy Hannah had a glorious additional bonus time of over one yr & two months after amp for osteo! She made me laugh everyday! Joined April's Angels after send off meal of steak, ice cream, M&Ms & deer poop!
We just got back from the vets office and he's going to amputate on Monday. We knew this was a possibility and I feel as good as I can about our decision. Niko has been basically using 3 legs for weeks now so I think he'll adapt well. Niko is a small poodle with lots of bounce and love to give. I thank you all for your support and patience while I figure the forum out. I will try to figure out how to post a picture on here.

Although amputation is always scary to think about for a dog we love, with Niko's leg not healing and I am sure very painful it sounds like the best long-term solution for your little lad. His upbeat personality will go a long way to hasten his recovery and finally having the pain of that broken leg removed will be a big relief once he gets past the first days of post-op. Many hugs and prayers for Monday.

Aww, great news that Niko's surgery went well today! Try to get a good night's sleep tonight before Niko comes home tomorrow because often the first few nights post op are not the most restful for everyone.
Lots of good wishes for an uneventful and speedy recovery for your little lad.
