Hello! Thought I'd check if anyone is online and see if anyone has any advice. Storm had her front leg amputated on Weds. She started whining yesterday and has not really stopped. It is pretty much constant. Any ideas on how we can calm her down?

Welcome and best wishes for Storm. Please consult with your vet about possibly adjusting her pain medication.

We can be of much better help here, if we have more information. What type/breed of dog is Storm? How old? What is her weight? What was the reason for the amputation? How is her mobility? How much and what type of activity is she currently getting? How is her appetite? Drinking plenty of water? Is she eliminating regularly?

It can be hard to tell but some dogs are dysphoric after anesthesia and this also applies to Fentanyl patches, tramadol, or codeine that are given to go home.  The dogs can whine and vocalize and just act odd.  If your dog is painful you can usually distract them out of it by petting or talking to them while dysphoric dogs continue whining randomly.  The best combo post-op is often gabapentin for phantom pain as well as an NSAID such as Dermaxx/Rimadyl/Metacam.

Storm is almost 4.  She is a Pit/Boxer mix and weighs about 60lbs (goal weight 55lbs, we have been working on losing weight with her).  She had her left front leg amputated due to cancer (mast cell tumor that came back).  She has been getting more and more active every day on her own but still rests quite a bit.  She's been eating, drinking, and going potty ok.  The only "issue" is the whining.  She has one of those Fentanyl patches and is taking gabapentin/Rimadyl.

I was thinking maybe the whining is a side effect to the meds, but am not sure.  She isn't showing any signs of pain.
