Our wonderful Boulder, 7 yr old big old hound dog, had a front leg amputation 10 days ago.  We've noticed his tripawd front leg/foot is really swollen.  Any suggestions?  We're calling the vet in the morning.  Otherwise he's been doing great.  He got right up after surgery and has been getting around pretty well although we still have him pretty much staying in bed except to go outside and potty.  Just wondering if others have had a front leg tripawd and seeing the leg/foot swollen.  thanks

BOULDER! Great name for a hound dog!

Don't have any insight into your specific situation, maybe the Vet or others can offer more insight.

It could be so many minor things....even an insect bite. It could also be some fluid from the incision....just guessing I think itsw a good idea to have him checked put in the am and make sure it's not some sort of infection, etc.

Good news that overall he is doing so well! Good sign!!

Do let us know what the vet says and try not to worry, okay. Weird swelling often shows up during recovery.
Would LOVE to see photos of Boulder!!

Ok, what I wanted to say is that this issue has happened before with other members. This post is a great discussion about fluid buildup in the leg, and here is another one. I hope you find some insight that can ease your worries. Most times it's nothing but fluid that instead of working its way out of the body at the incision (a seroma ) it moves somewhere where it can't get out. Do call your vet in the morning though, you really want to let them know what's going on.

Keep us posted!

Sorry for the delay,

Often the remaining foot swells due to overuse.  You can try booties to protect the foot and soaking of there are any sores.  Most of the time this resolves after a few weeks.

Thank you all for the info.  The vet thought it was swelling.  Boulder got his staples out today (about 60 staples).  He's doing good.  I'd love to attach photos but seem to be technically ignorant on how to do that on this forum.  Thanks!

Glad he saw the vet. Wow 60 staples! That's a big incision. What a brave boy.

Here are instructions for adding photos. If you would like help just holler, PM me.
