Hello from Baltimore, Maryland (Baltimore County). Would love to hear from Tripawds in my area.
My 7 year old toy breed Papillon became a Tripawd on 9/3/10 due to an infection that resulted from the emergency clinic wrapping her leg too tight. She had broken her leg and was healing in a splint. Accident happened on a Saturday night so we took her to a 24hr. emergency clinic, then we took her to her regular clinic that Monday a.m. for follow-up. They looked at her emergency clinic x-ray of the re-set of her leg and said to come back in two weeks for an x-ray. The re-set x-ray looked good to her vet and chance were good that she could heal in a splint. Came back in two weeks and the x-ray showed that she was slightly healing and to come back the next day for them to put a regular cast on her to keep the leg even more stable. Came back the next day and when they took the splint off, the infection was discovered. After two days of Baytril, it was not clearing up. Was able to go to an Orthopedic Surgeon quickly and they told us that the infection was so bad that her leg could not be saved. She had amputation that day with her vet.

Hi Pippin! we're sorry to hear about the infection. Vampire Bill broke his leg when he was hit by a car, unfortunately it was shattered and there was no way to save it. We're in the Fredericksburg area. I know it's a little bit further, but we do travel to northern va a lot 🙂 Maybe we can get together sometime 🙂 We're always looking for other tripawds in our area 🙂 This site has been a God-send for us! Everyone here is so welcoming and they have all kinds of information. We're happy to meet you! VB and Dani
Can't think of a better pawty than Vampire Bill and Pippin the Pappillon! Hope you guys make it happen.

Hi Pippa's people! Sorry we are here- but glad to be in such awesome company. We are in Balto County also- Essex area. Kenmore's amp is scheduled for Tuesday 11/9......at our local vet, whom we love & trust. He's a GSD/Smooth Haired Collie rescue -4 years old. Kenmore has a tumor on his left "wrist." We"d be honored to meet you one day after our recovery. Kenmore is a tall blonde, but loves little dogs the best. Wishing you all the best, kisses & lick-licks. take care of yourself too.
Hello. I'm sorry to hear of Kennmore's circumstances. You will find a lot of information and support on this site! I have written a blog about Pippin's recovery which is listed below. I haven't updated it much lately, but maybe it will help you. I would suggest reading people's blogs on recovery in addition to all the reading material available on here. I'm sure you have hundreds of questions going on in your head right now. The first week is the hardest, but once they get their stitches out they recover quickly and have a change of attitude.
We would be happy to meet you some day. We live in Overlea (next to White Marsh) off Kenwood Ave.
Are you on Facebook by chance that I could connect with you?

Hey guys,
Unfortunately looks like I'll have another Baltimore pup to add to the site. Marcus is a 10yr old Vizsla. He's been on chemo for about 8 months in an attempt to treat several malignant subcutaneous tumors. None of the 4 drugs tried were effective, so recently had surgery to remove one tumor on his back leg and radiation to attempt to reduce size of a large one between toes on a front paw. There was no reduction at all from the radiation. The tumor is now quite large and threatens to break through the skin. At this point it appears that amputation is the only alternative. He's completely healthy otherwise, so there's really no question about going through with it. I'm glad the photos were posted here - I hadn't really thought about the immediate post-surgery time and certainly have realized that I need to prep myself a bit for it. My 'ex isn't going to want to see any of this, so will have to ease into that part ("shared custody" of the dog for the last 8 years - a bit weird, but it's worked for us). No doubt that it is going to be much harder for the two humans than for the dog. Marcus is a big baby, but he's also a tough dog and very resilient. Have already joked that he gets a name change to Tripod, so site name gave me a good chuckle. Will need to check back in with you guys afterwards - maybe plan a playdate at Robert E. Lee Park (north Balt City off Falls Road, just below county line). Out near Owings Mills here....
Thanks for the site - has already been beneficial on my first visit.
