So hoping this is resolved soon for beautiful Zeus. Lily just finished Metronidazole for 5 days -she has a really sensitive stomach also. The doc is also starting her on a new med (I think it's Sucralfate) because he thinks she may have a little ulcer. Sending pawsitive thoughts your way-I know it's such a worry. Hoping that Zeus is feeling brand new so soon.
Joan and Lily
Our beautiful Lily was diagnosed with osteosarcoma in her front leg on 12/14/11 at age 8 and had amp on 12/16/11. She completed 5 rounds of carbo. She was so brave and kicked cancer's butt daily! She lived life fully for 4 years, 3 months, and 15 days after her amp. My angel is a warrior princess. I miss her so much.
Just thought of something else-had a long talk with the specialist at our natural pet food store, and he recommended a little tripe to help with digestion and encouraging our furbabies to eat.
Come on, Zeus, we want you feeling all better soon!

I DID CCCCCCRINGE! I hate that Metronidazole!!! I was certain Comet had brain cancer because all of her symptoms kept pointing to it! She was fine after discontinuing Metron. Some dogs fair well on it and some don't.
I was so thankful that Charon's vet confirmed all of my suspicions even though Comet had long passed since taking that drug because my vet didn't indicate it was bad or could be bad. I'm glad you found our old topic. And yes, you are suppose to discontinue the drug immediately if you see any strange signs. This what Charon's vet told her and when she saw odd signs, she stopped it.
I sure hope this is all that is going on with Zeus. I really, really, really hope so!!!!
He has really had a bad go of it! He is such a happy seeming dog, I hate seeing him unhappy and sickly. I know you wanted to throw everything at him but maybe it's a sign? So many dogs here have done so well without any chemo and lived fabulous lives without it. We actually used to have good discussions here about the pros and cons of chemo. And it had nothing to do with whether people could afford it. It was based on whether or not chemo helped. One of old, old members is coming up on 23 month ampuversary and never had a bad day; choosing not to do chemo for OS.
I really, really, really hope Zeus gets better soon! Give him a little kiss from me. And tell him MB will come and knock him over....that'll get him coordinated!
Comet - 1999 to 2011
She departed us unexpectedly January 23, 2011 at the age of 12 1/2.
She was born with a deformed front leg and a tripawd all of her life.
I hope that Zeus is feeling better. If he really can't handle the metronidazole then your vet may prescribe amoxicillin. It is usually well-tolerated and is good for both the digestive tract as well as the pancreas. Does your vet feel that the low WBC count is due to the chemo or the pancreatitis? I would also add on sucralfate just in case the piroxicam caused some ulceration and therefore a low RBC count but I think we talked about that before.

Thrilled to report that Zeus did wonderful today!! Seriously, he is like a different dog from yesterday. When we got home from work he literally bounced through the house to get to his dad. I can't understand how he can go from confused and uncoordinated to normal in only 24 hours. Yesterday morning one of my employers was teary when we got to work because she could visibly see how different he was.
We discontinued the Metronidazole yesterday morning. I truly don't know if it was the pancreatitis that was making him feel bad or if it was in fact the medicine, but he is worlds better today than yesterday.
I appreciate everyone's concern more than you know. I cannot tell you the terror I felt yesterday morning when the alarm went off and he didn't get up. In almost twelve years I have NEVER had to shake him to wake him up. And it wasn't just touching him, it was shaking him five or six times while frantically calling his name. I honestly thought he had passed in his sleep.
Pam, I thought when you mentioned sucralfate that it was something to give him with medicines to help prevent queasiness. It never even occurred to me that he may have an ulceration. I will most certainly look into that. Your input and support on this site is priceless. Thank you so much.
Once again, thank you all so very much for your support.
Zeus was a Husky mix diagnosed with Osteosarcoma at age 11. A visible lung met and suspicious spot on his liver meant a poor prognosis-six weeks was our vet's best guess. We decided to fight for our boy and his right front leg was amputated on 12/1/11. We did six rounds of chemo, changed his diet and spoiled him completely rotten. We were blessed with 10 great months after diagnosis. Against the odds, the lung met remained a single met and grew very little over those months. A wonderful furbaby with the most gentle spirit, he fought with a strength that we never imagined he possessed. We have no regrets...

Thanks for the good post on Zeus. It does seem like he has a problem with certain meds -- poor guy. Hopefully you have an uneventful weekend so everyone can relax. I think dogs are just like people, they get sick and need some downtime to recoup. Important thing is that he is better.
Harley is an 8 year old Golden Retriever. Amp surgery for an infiltrative lipoma canceled due to two masses in chest. A rescue, he found his forever home on 3/18/07 and left for his eternal home on 1/09/13. His story and medical history are at http://myharley.....pawds.com/
Hooray for Zeusy feeling better. It sure sounds like it was the medicine - hope that's all it was!
Hope he has a good weekend!
Abby: Aug 1, 2009 – Jan 10, 2012. Our beautiful rescue pup lived LARGE with osteosarcoma for 15 months – half her way-too-short life. I think our "halflistic" approach (mixing traditional meds + supplements) helped her thrive. (PM me for details. I'm happy to help.) She had lung mets for over a year. They took her from us in the end, but they cannot take her spirit! She will live forever in our hearts. She loved the beach and giving kisses and going to In-N-Out for a Flying Dutchman. Tripawds blog, and a more detailed blog here. Please also check out my novel, What the Dog Ate. Now also in paperback! Purchase it at Amazon via Tripawds and help support Tripawds!
OH! This is great news! Thank goodness! Please don't let anyone ever talk you into that drug. REFUSE, REFUSE REFUSE IT! There are other drugs to use!
When it wears off...it's like a new dog - I KNOW! I was planning Comet's funeral too! And by 2 pm the next day, she was normal!

OMG! I know how that feels because I had that happen too! It was late in Comet's life and I think it was because she was going deaf. But I totally know how scary it is! I remember walking the death march to turn on the lights so i could deal with it all....I was in slow motion walking to the light switch knowing she was dead...and saying to myself...."She is gone." Later I broke down about it all - even tho it was a false alarm!
Let us hope we can put this behind us and Zeus is his great self again!
