As you know she is spending the evening at the emergency vet. I just called to check in and she is doing very well. She has not bled through her bandage so I am relieved with that news. We'll check the rbc count in the morning and hope all is well.
With the exception of her bleeding, they were very impressed with her healing 6 days post op. They could not believe her energy and eagerness to want to get moving.
So for tonite Wrigley is good. Our other shepherd is trying to figure this all out- why she keeps going away - my husband took him to the river today to try and distract him, but he misses his sister. It's just not the same.
We'll let you know more in the morning.
Thanks again for all the support.

Good to hear that Wrigley is doing better. I know how scared you were for him. Keep us posted on his progress

Oh my gosh! I just read your post this morning. Poor Wrigley and poor YOU! Im sure that was terrifying. Hopefully its nothing to worry about and the rest at the vet will help. Max does not have stitches (although I keep calling them that) he has staples. At least you can consult with the surgeon today and figure out if theres anything more serious going on than over activity. Keep us posted and we are sending lots of love and pawsitive thoughts!

Hi Everyone,
Wrigley is hanging in there. She's a tough gal.
Her brother Rookie on the other hand (and her mom/dad and family
too) are going nuts .
She is back with her surgeon Dr Richardson.
Her rbc count is dropping so the emergency folks were worried there's
something terrible going on so I took her back to Dr. Richardson so he
could reevaluate. She will stay with him today. They are going to
monitor her rbc and to make sure it doesn't get any lower. He thought
she looked clinically very good, and really did not want to reopen her
up just yet. He will do a tranfusion if things drop really low he said.
Bad news is the lab results came back this morning too.
Microsopic findings:
1. Lymph node, reactive/hyperplastic
2. Osetosarcoma, high grade, chondroblastic.
Not
what I wanted to hear, but they keep telling me we got it early. They
recommended postponing my appt. with the oncologist until Wrigley is
out of the woods. Dr. Richardson didn't feel it would matter if I went
tomorrow or next week as far as any treatment options. ( feel free to
let me know if anyone feels differently).
Thanks again for all the support you are giving us. It means the world to us.
I will keep you posted.

Hi there - I'm sorry to hear about the lab results, but stay pawsitive that they caught it early. I was a wreck when I got Zeus' results too - just the confirmation that our beautiful innocent babies have this ugly disease I think. They caught Zeus' early and he has the aggressive osteosarcoma and 9 months post amp he is doing AMAZING!!!! I count my blessings each day that he has done sooooo well.
I agree with your doc about putting off the oncologist appt - a week or two is not going to matter and it's better to just focus on one thing at a time - there is a lot to digest here for you and for Wrigley with the amputation and the complications that are happening with the blood counts. It sounds like she is in good hands...we're sending more puppy prayers and hope that she is home with you soon.
Again, please keep us posted...we're thinking of you lots.
xo

Even though Wrigley's biopsy came back as high grade OSA it is very important to note that the lymph node was clear of cancer. A reactive lymph node is enlarged because the body is trying to fight the inflammation of the cancer so that is a very good thing!
I would agree to delay the oncology appointment. We delayed Tazzie's by 1 week because she was fighting a liver infection and I don't think it is a good idea to tax the immune system with chemo if the body is already dealing with something else as major as a dropping red cell count.
How low is the packed cell volume (PCV)? We don't usually transfuse unless it is below 15 or 20% and most normal dogs are at 35-55%. If the bleeding has been controlled but the PCV keeps dropping then they might need to open the incision but it can take the body a few days to make new red cells so your surgeon is smart to wait.
Good luck!

She was at 23 when I took her in yesterday and they first tested. It
went to 25 later last night. It dropped to 20 at 6:30 this am and then
18 at around 9:30. Dr. Richardson is monitoring to make sure it doesn't
hit 15- he said at that point he will do something.
She has a compression wrap on and he is hoping that will solve the problem.
I have not heard from him yet and they are very good about calling so I am hoping no new is good news.
Thanks for your expertise.

That's a good thing, and more importantly she is out of pain thanks to the amputation. Best wishes for a speedy recovery and plenty of quality time to come!
