Welcome to the family. Gus was intially prescribed tramadol 100/mg twice a day and he was 100 lbs., he had trouble with it so we took him off and had him on rimidyl and Gabapentin. He was alot better without the tramadol. Those good vet visits do wonders for moms and dads don't they!!!! Gus had some red coloring toward the bottom of his incision a few days after surgery, he never had any kind of wrap, the vet said it was probably bruising, and it did go away after a few days. As long as it doesn't have puss coming out of it or starts to smell, you should be fine. you've come to a great place, hop on the bus and andhold on for the ride, just when you think your smoooth sailing, that stupid bump in the road shows up, but after that first 2 weeks, it will get ALOT smoother. Good luck, Gus and Dan. Did someone mention we were having math class again!!!!!!
My buddy Gus had a left front amputation on April 7, 2010 and lived a great life until July 26,2010

Can't blame you for wanting to hide the incision from your girl, not one bit. Let us know how she copes with things, we're always up for new insight with kids and how they cope with new Tripawds.
Sure... As I mentioned before, when I first told Lila about the impending amputation (I said Tshuvah's leg had gotten very big big big sick...so Lila wouldn't think that the next time she got a scratch on her own leg we'd be taking it off), Lila burst into tears and for days said she didn't want to see Tshuvah again, didn't want Tshuvah with three legs etc. She was just terrified. This went on for several days, all during Tshuvah's hospitalization. During that time we looked at pictures on line of tripawd dogs, also videos on Youtube. We talked a lot about it and had her teacher and camp leaders talk with her and the other kids. Her teacher even had the kids all get down on the floor and walk with "4 legs" and then walk with "3 legs" so they could experience how it was possible to do so.
Having the techs wrap Tshuvah and decorate the wrap with butterflies and stars and hearts made a big difference for Lila's first exposure to Tshuvah post-op. I made sure to buy t-shirts with cute decorations, mostly in pink which is Lila's favorite color. Yesterday I had to take Tshuvah to the vet and pick Lila up from camp first. So before picking Lila up I put a pink t-shirt on Tshuvah with a crown and the word "princess" on the back which I knew Lila would like.
So here's a funny little story: When Lila got in her car seat next to Tshuvah, she immediately commented on how cute Tshuvah looked in her pretty shirt. Then she noticed that the shirt had an arm where Tshuvah doesn't have an arm anymore, and Lila became confused. She thought that Tshuvah's amputated leg had somehow come back. She got upset, and told me, "Mama, tell the vet to take Tshuvah leg off again! I want Tshuvah with three legs!"
so I think we're conquered the fear thing, LOL!
and an update: Last night we had two of Tshuvah's favorite people come by to dote on her a little. This morning, she ate breakfast, had a big drink of water, pee'd and pooped, and took her pills with the pill gun (tramadol down to just one tablet, simplicef and previcox). She enjoyed a ride in the car, her favorite thing. Now she's resting again in one of her favorite quiet places. So far, a much better day.

That was an adorable story about Lila! I loved it! And how wonderful to have her teachers help out!
So glad Tshuvah is doing better!

Wow! That admin is not only a gorgeous Italian-looking hunk-a-roo in his undies, he's also a swell, all around guy!
I wished I had had him to tell me to disable the back button click on my fancy mouse - I bet I've written 100 posts and accidently tapped my mouse only to lose current the page!
