So Shelby went off her meds for her colitis issues and I am happy to report that she seems to be doing better in the poop department. Everything seems to have worked itself out and is back to normal. She also seems to be smacking/licking her muzzle/chops less and less with the licking of the nose (like there is peanut butter on it). I don't know if the two were related since no doctor could ever confirm that those meds had any side effects. She was on Flagyl for 5 days (2X a day). She's still on a daily dose of Metacam for life.
I got home late from work last night and she was a bit peeved as her dinner was almost 2 hours late BUT she ate her food like a champ and settled down pretty quickly for the evening. I do not think I saw any excessive evening 'panting' last night. She was still doing that on and off - not sure if there was anything 'wrong' per se or if it's an attention thing. She did play 'toss the pig ear' around the room so I think (*hope*) we are inching toward when we can play toss our stuffed toys around.
She did start out in my bedroom last night as seen here: I am not sure when she left and I have seen her sleep in that bed but clearly, she is choosing the floor over the bed. She also gets super bitter at night now that I won't let her up on my bed but I know she roams at night and I can't risk her jumping off so floor city for her. Falling asleep to the sounds of her snoring (loudly) was nice!
This morning, she was definitely quite alert, happy and active. She's going further on her walks (around the block but that's big for us since I don't have to carry her back when she goes to far and then refuses to move). She still will put the breaks on when she doesn't want to come home and you know you don't want to pull on a tripawd. It absolutely POURED last night and walking a Tripawd in the rain was not much fun (she never liked to be out in the rain so that hasn't changed). Then drying her off and trying to get her paws. I think she rather liked it though since she can't scratch her ears / neck anymore so the towel probably felt amazing!
This was her this a.m. before I left for work - snuggled (amp side down) in her bed. Happy eyes! Alert face. Happy Mommy for sure!!!
So I do start to see more improvements. We go Tuesday for a check-up, X-rays and to get our maintenance chemo drugs. I know the day of her amputation, we did see some tiny lung mets and I try really hard not to think about it or focus on them as they did appear about 3 weeks after she's gotten a clear check up from her ultra-sound. Her onco still feels positive (I think) about the course of treatment for Shelby. I think she's gotten a bit chunky but everyone tells me she looks the same. Of course now i worry about everything - how if her rib cage looks wide, that's because of bloating or the mets or something else! But since, for the most part, she's being normal Shelby, healthy eater, drinker, pottier ... and ALWAYS happy to give loves and snuggles... I think she's doing really well - considering!

Our story: Broke rear leg in June 2013 - non-conclusive results for cancer so leg was plated and pinned. Enlarged spleen in September 2013 and had it removed and was diagnosed with Hemangiosarcoma and started chemotherapy. Became a Tripawd January 8th, 2014 and definitive Hemangiosarcoma diagnosis. Three major surgeries in 7 months and Shelby took them all like a champ only to lose her battle to cancer in her brain. We had 8 amazing extra months together and no regrets. #shelbystrong #loveofmylife
Waaaaaaaay to go SHELBYSTRONG
Walking a full block really, real is huge! This girl is amazing!
I k lw not beng able to sleep with you is hard n both- Could you move the bed into a "corner" and somehow maybe block off the open sides with a chest of drawers, bookcase, etc.? Just a thought. She seems to be adjusting just fine though to being able to sleep anywhere she desires and being able to roam at will!
She's doing so very, very well! I know it seemed like recovery was taking forever but it was well worth the wait! GREAT, GREAT VICTORY!!
Her pictures are just soooooo sweet...love seeing them! Keep 'em coming!
Hugs and love!

Happy Hannah had a glorious additional bonus time of over one yr & two months after amp for osteo! She made me laugh everyday! Joined April's Angels after send off meal of steak, ice cream, M&Ms & deer poop!
That's all so very encouraging! Way to go Shelby and mom
Liberty (Libby) was diagnosed with OSA on 1-22-13. Right front amputation on 1-31-13. No IV Chemo. Metronomic Therapy started 2-19-13 along with supplements and some home cooking. Lungs clear until 1-06-14. She's still her happy, hoppy, bossy self. Living the dog life to the fullest and a proud Winter Warrior. :) RIP my Libby 4-21-03 to 3-19-14
Really well? She's doing awesome! It's great to see her out of that bathroom and onto her bed where she belongs.
As for the bloating from mets, we've never seen that here so get that thought out of your head OK?

Thank you all!!! I was out all day yesterday and had to work but Shelby did great chillaxin' on her own! I think what I think is 'bloat' is that my little tripawd is getting a tad chunky! How she gained that much weight in 3 weeks, I don't know but she is definitely LESS lean than she was when I brought her home!
So she doesn't spend the night in my room but she starts out in there. It's like she knows that I want her in there so she will sleep on the floor next to my bed (which is where she was since June pre-amp) but she leaves ... either goes to the bathroom or the living room. Or the hallway between the bedroom and bathroom. she always looks pretty comfy cozy in the a.m. so I'm letting to go. Big steps for mama! However I do have to turn on ALL the lights in the a.m. to make sure I see WHERE she is so I don't step on her!
She tripped on her walk this a.m. ... went up a little mound to 'mark' it and couldn't get back town and tumbled. I think I was more freaked out than her. I tried to not to gasp but she shook it off like a champ! Gave me a look as if to say, what's the problem, mommy, I see you trip all the time in your big girl shoes!
Almost 6 weeks down....

You're right, it's always worse for the humans to see those little stumbles. They happen, but dogs just know how to go on and keep on livin' life! Isn't it great to know that's definitely pawsible?!

Dogs are truly amazing... I learn so much from Shelby each day! I love watching her get her fur up (like a mohawk) when she thinks she can go all bad ass on a cat again! I do hold her back from chasing but she amazes me.
I think, if she misses anything, is being able to do her "Ferdinand the Bull" impression - where she would kick back the dirt w/her hind legs in response to seeing a cat OR after a poop! she always used to do that and for her poop experience, I think it was a satisfying end as she was never truly "finished" until she did that. She can't do that anymore.
However, you were right! She can sit up on her mama's lap/legs outside! As I have always done, I put her here BUT she stayed on her own w/out the assistance of me! Watching the day go by....

Awwwwww, this really warms myheart. I remeber when you first started here and youposted a picture like this pre-amp. Yo were concerned she wouldn't be avle to sit like this and watch the day go by! HA! SHELBYSTRONG proved your concerns were baseless nce again!!
Heck, in ermind, she probavly still is using her "missing leg" to do her Ferdinand te Bull impression!
These pictures are priceless! They show such contentment and happiness just for thrill of being with you, being in the moment and just being a dog. Shelby, we love you!

That's great! She looks so pleased with herself. I would like to trade our weather for yours, though

YES!!! Sally - I was definitely remembering back when we first went through this and Jerry assured me she would be able to sit on my lap like that again (like a princess on her throne). She was very happy out there today!
And yes, we are blessed to live in So. Cal so our weather is very nice. It was only in the 60s but somehow, she still got over-heated! Silly girl. Thank you so much!

So Shelby had a visit to her oncologist today which is conveniently connected to her surgeon so my rockstar is exhausted from visiting with her 'fan' club for a couple hours! 🙂
The good news is that the lung mets didn't appear to grow significantly from where they were about 6 weeks ago when we first saw them (maybe a marginal growth but her onco wasn't worried). They also didn't shrink. So we discussed doing a few more treatments of chemo to try and continue to stabilize the cancer. She has had 6 treatments already but I figure, I didn't go to medical school so who am I to question the doctor? And then we'll go on the maintenance chemo drugs.
They assured me that Shelby looks great and is doing great - she actually lost .5 pounds so my fear of her being 'chunky' was unfounded. I think it's because her front looks thicker/bigger with full fur and two legs vs. the skinny backside of her.
They also gave me the referral and info about the mushrooms so I can look into getting those tomorrow since she said it can't hurt her. So more chemo ... more waiting rooms ... more post chemo nausea. But since I am feeding her now good stuff that I have cooked, I am hoping that will be better. They also told me that it is OK for dogs with cancer to have barley (I was trying to keep Shelby grain-free , which I guess it is but it's still a carb).
At the end of the day, in all reality, my dog has had cancer since June when she broke her leg - we didn't find it until September. We were given 6 months from that date and since I feel confident she's going to make it to March, like Jerry says, prognosis-shmognosis. I am choosing to 'ignore' the part where the lung mets didn't shrink (they also didn't really grow), focus on the fact that Shelby is acting like a puppy and not at all like a dog that has cancer, and know that my baby really is an amazing testament to a dog's will to survive. Her will to live is so strong and her life here is SO amazing - why would she want to leave?!? I will continue to do all that I can to protect her but tonight, I am going to let her snooze and snore away... it's tough being a rockstar and being every vet techs favorite!

That sounds like a pretty good visit to me! To reach a point of "stable disease" as they call it when mets don't grow, is fabulous!
What mushrooms did they discuss with you?
And as far as questioning the vet...nope, you're not one, but it is most definitely your job to question them so never forget that OK? Here's a great Tripawd Talk Radio episode that explains the importance of being a good pawrent advocate for your animals.

Congrats Alison and Shelby.....you have a plan and you are truly living life with the "Be More Dog " philosophy.
I was delighted to see the photos of Shelby sitting in her "old position" on your lap.....she has really adapted to being a tripawd like a rock star.
