When I came home after work yesterday Roman was panting, he seemed like he had been running around or something. I let him inside as usual but he kept up the panting and he seemed listless, he wouldn't settle anywhere, he would get up and move suddenly like he had been startled, he avoided his beds and laid down in the kitchen a few times which he never does. His appetite was fine but he didn't stop the panting until early the next morning, like 1 or 2 AM. He was at the vet last Wed. for hip pain (Its arthritis) and he has been taking Rimadyl (has taken before) since then and he got a cortisone shot at the vets office he also had blood work and it was normal. He had a seizure Dec 3rd (1st one we know of) and his weird behavior makes me wonder if he had a seizure while we were gone during the day???? He wasn't afraid of us like he was after the first seizure though. He seemed normal this morning. Any similar experiences or thoughts on what might be wrong?? Thanks.
Is it warm where you are in CA? Was he outside all day while you were at work? He could be hot, in pain, or the medication is affecting him in some way. Good to hear that he was normal this morning. I suggest just keeping an eye on him. If it continues, it never hurts to contact your vet.
Please keep us posted! Sending you many golden hugs,
Cathy
Oh gosh! Sorry to hear about Roman's episode!
That could be so many things. Heat... like Goldengirls said. Or the aftermath of a seizure or pain or who knows. I would probably jingle up my vet and tell him and get his input.
Lots of good thoughts.

She departed us unexpectedly January 23, 2011 at the age of 12 1/2.
She was born with a deformed front leg and a tripawd all of her life.
I considered the Vet but its always "bring him in" which would be fine but I just took time off for the vet last week and no one can cover for me today, I wish I could stay home all day with him but I have to worry at my desk for 40hrs a week!! Arrg. And the weather has been in the 60's don't think its a factor.........
I wish I could help but all I can think of is that it was maybe a muscle pull or some or of injury? Or could he have eaten something bad?
Usually a seizure aftermath is exactly as you described, a dog will sleep a lot or hide.
I hope he's feeling better and this doesn't happen again. This is definitely something to talk to your vet about; be sure to log when it happened and exactly what his symptoms were.

My pug Tani never exhibits the behavior you describe around her seizures.
A couple side effects of cortisone injections in dogs are hyperactivity and panting. It sounds like it has been 5 or 6 days since his injection. Has he had them before? Did he react at all? Could you call the vet and ask if he could have side effects from the injection 6 days later without having to take him in?
If its not that then what you describe sounds to me like he is responding to some type of pain. The panting is one sign- but the getting up like he is startled sounds like twinges or muscle spasms. Tani also has fairly widespread arthritis and will sometimes wake out of a dead sleep like she was startled, and she stands with a hump in her back and her tail down which indicates pain. She is deaf so it is not noises that wake her up. She now sometimes chooses to lay on the floor instead of her bed- I think the firm surface is more comfortable for her.
I know Roman is a big boy, but can you take his temperature? That way you would know he is not panting or laying on the floor because he has a temperature.
You could also post this question in the Ask A Vet forum to get Dr. Pam's opinion.
I hope Roman feels better.
