Now at 7 days post amp. Going pretty well. Townsey is regaining his old personality and doing better and better at adpating to 3 legs. His gait when he is going faster than a walk looks effortless. At slower speeds he looks okay too.
Still won't try the stairs but he does wait at the bottom for me to help him up. The towel doesn't work for him, so i just give his rear end a little lift as we go a step at a time. Works okay. I do have the RUff harness on the way, so I imagine that will help a lot.
As far as pain meds, seems there was a miscommunication when we picked him up. They said use Tramadol as needed, but I talked to the surgeon yesterday and he was shocked that we weren't giving Townes 2 tramdol 3 times a day, which is what he wanted. He really believes that pain hinders recovery a lot. The heavy panting has slowed quite a bit anyway, but I'm going to follow the doc's instructions and keep him on the Tramadol for 4 more days, whether I think he needs it or not. He's also on 75mg of Novox twice a day.
So overall things are good. I haven't had one of those moments where I was sorry I had gone ahead with the amputation for 3 days of so. Instead I've been filled with a lot of gratitude that I found my way to do it. No little thanks to you folks!
cheers,
Dan
Awww--so glad to hear things are going well for Townes AND you!! He seems to be having an incredibly successful surgery...and no pain meds t first?? Wow!

That's a fantastic report! Yeah, we agree with the surgeon, keeping him on the pain meds is the way to go at least for a few more days. How many stairs does Townes have to do every day to get around?

Hi All,
Here's an update on Townsey's progress. THe news is about as good as it can be, He had his stitches out Wednesday, and is no longer having to wear a cone on his head (to protect the incision from him licking). Although it wasn't easy at first, he seems to be adjusting and compensating well. I think we got very lucky in that we had a relatively easy time of it, or at least have had so far.
Way to way to go Townsey!!!
Jill is a 9-year-old tuxedo kitty. She was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma in June 2012 on her toe in her right hind leg. Her leg was amputated on 12/12/12 and she completed four rounds of chemo (2 of Carbo, 2 of Doxy) in April 2013. That's a great progress report! Dakota did not try stairs for a long time, but he was a front amputee and I think he was really intimidated by them. He really had no reason to climb them, as only the bedrooms were upstairs and he wasn't a bedroom sleeper. But I don't think it's abnormal to be fearful of stairs. Being confident enough to run around outside is really important, and Townes has got that one down!

Such a great report on Townes! Just saw the video also oh taking you for walk! Very impressive and very impressively handsome!,
Best new of all is that his personality is shimg through.....and it still even gets better!
My Happy Hannah still only goes downstairs and uses the ramp to "go up". She will try a stair or two every now and then but her remaining back let just doesn't seem to hold up well ( she's a bit of a chunk) and then she gets scared. But he, if that's the only hurdles.......no problem!
Love the great reports. Please keep us posted and best wishes for a successful o side effect chemo next week!
Keep taking our did or walks Townes! You may have to slow down a bit to let him catch up!

So great to hear things are going well. Way to go!
Liberty (Libby) was diagnosed with OSA on 1-22-13. Right front amputation on 1-31-13. No IV Chemo. Metronomic Therapy started 2-19-13 along with supplements and some home cooking. Lungs clear until 1-06-14. She's still her happy, hoppy, bossy self. Living the dog life to the fullest and a proud Winter Warrior. :) RIP my Libby 4-21-03 to 3-19-14
Dan that is GREAT! Congratulations on making it over this huge hurdle. 14 steps is pretty darn good!
Hope that the chemo is all smooth sailing. What is the protocol he's getting?
Let us know how it's going.

Yippe skippy! This a GREAT update! Keep it up, Townsey!
ACL tear in right hind leg 12/5/12 and scheduled ACL repair surgery 12/21/12. Pre-op xrays revealed osteosarcoma. Amputation 12/28/12. Chemo (carboplatin) started Jan 10, 2013 and ended on April 5, for a total of 5 doses. He handled carbo like a champ! No side effects. We started metronomic therapy at his third chemo and have been also doing some holistic treatments. He's a lively, playful 10 year old huskie-boarder collie and a very proud member of the Winter Warriors! Our love. Our funny little guy!
