Hi all, Ok, here's the latest:
We've been on a withdrawl program for Kona to get her off the tramadol and prednisone.
Prednisone, of course, you cannot just stop, because the liver won't work correctly if at all if you don't do a reduction.(can be fatal)
And, we didn't know that tramadol was such an issue to get off of.
When Kona had her amp surgery, she wasn't on it very long…….maybe 10 days.
But, since we've been going through this disc issue, she's been on both for over a month.
Ugh, the withdrawl is not pleasant……….the tramadol in particular…..panting, nervous tremors, thrashing, anxiety, buzzing, electrical shock sensation, nervousness, panic, chills, shaking, hallucinations, etc………
YIKES, right?!
Yes, some of the info we found out from humans who were on it. They say that it's actually harder to kick than heroin .
We're getting through it. It somehow helps to know that these ARE the symptoms, you know?
Put's a face on it, so to speak. We can understand it more, but still tough.
Kona's still not able to do anything with her remaining back leg, although we know that with anything spinal, it can take a long time.
She's getting her chiropractic care, which does seem to be helping her.
However, we are getting ready to order her a pup cart, so she'll be mobile and can get stronger again, get freedom again, etc.
Thankfully, her front legs are plenty strong! Ok, very strong 🙂 so she'll be powering up her wheels I'm sure.
more soon
Happy Thanksgiving everyone!
Health to ALL
hugs,
Denise

Sorry Kona Kai that you're trying to get the monkey off your back! At least it's not a monkeydog on your back!
Poor baby. I sure hope her spine gets healed. Comet's neck problems sure caused her to be immobile for a long while but she is pretty much back to her old self now expect she is chubby and older.
I have a lot of hope that Kona will be good as new here soon!
Comet - 1999 to 2011
She departed us unexpectedly January 23, 2011 at the age of 12 1/2.
She was born with a deformed front leg and a tripawd all of her life.
Pup withdraws, no fun. I made sure to get Chloe off the tramadol asap after amp. Being on it gave her all those symptoms... I wish you the best, hopefully she can get through this soon and be back to a normal pup.
Happy Thanksgiving and health to you and Kona too!!!

Chloe became a rear amp tripawd on 7-29-10. Another tumor was removed on front leg 2-20-14. Found 3rd tumor on neck 2-2015, but she's still kicking cancer's butt at age 14. Chloe's blog
Yeah, the withdrawl symptoms are awlful...ugh
Yes, we got Kona off the tramadol fast after her amp, but then the doc put her back on it when she hurt her back and remaining leg...
She's been on it since Oct. 18th, I think, and yeah, it is not pleasant.
Thank you for saying that Chloe went through the same symptoms. You know it helps to at least know that that IS what it is...you know what I mean? Withdrawl not something else.
How long was Chloe suffering from the withdrawl symptoms?
(something no doubt to forget, right?)
thank you,
Denise

For Chloe it lasted a few days (less than a week), but she wasn't on it as long as Kona. Maybe it doesn't matter, but hopefully Kona's symptoms subside soon...
Chloe is a pretty active dog, so maybe exercise helped her get the toxins out. Just a thought.

I noticed Kess having withdrawl as she came off the med, and suspected it was the tramadol. I weaned her off pretty slowly and went down to 1/4 pill once a day and then every other day for a bit and then finally off. Seemed like the worst of it passed after 3 days, but it wasn't as bad as Kona. Kess just seemed withdrawn and depressed. My landlord in college had a dog w/cart. Didn't slow her down one bit, went crashing through the house happy as can be everytime they came by for a visit.
Hope you get to feeling better kona. I'm sure being able to move around under her own steam will lift her spirits and help distract her.
