Thank you all for your kind words and thoughts. Your encouragement definitely kept me strong through the night knowing everything I was experiencing was normal. I'm so glad I found this website. I don't think I could've made it through this without all of your experience.
Neither I, nor Abbee, slept a wink last night. But as soon as I left for work she finally started to sleep. My husband is watching her today.
She did take all of her meds and even has a normal appetite. She won't stand at all still...so no urinating has happened since yesterday morning. She just lays over every time I sit her on the ground. She just looks at me like "ya right mom!"... Lol
There isn't much rest for a few nights, I know. Taking all her meds and having a normal appetite is a very good sign! Do you have a sling or something to help support her when she does stand? She probably won't need assistance very long since they adapt so well to their new normal.
Not peeing for the first 24 hours isn't unusual, I don't believe. More knowledgeable people will chime in here I'm sure. As long as she is drinking and eating normally her system will start up again and start moving things through. The pain meds can mess with that as well. If she has a hard time going poo, you can add some plain greek yogurt or pumpkin to her food.
Good luck and I look forward to more updates.
Amy & Libby
Liberty (Libby) was diagnosed with OSA on 1-22-13. Right front amputation on 1-31-13. No IV Chemo. Metronomic Therapy started 2-19-13 along with supplements and some home cooking. Lungs clear until 1-06-14. She's still her happy, hoppy, bossy self. Living the dog life to the fullest and a proud Winter Warrior. :) RIP my Libby 4-21-03 to 3-19-14
So glad you made it through the first night! I can't imagine how rough that was (Cody stayed his first night at the hospital). Sleepless nights are a plenty during the first two weeks... but it WILL get better! Eating and drinking are great things! Keep trying to get her up and she will adapt to walking pretty quickly.. she still may be loopy from all those meds!
good luck and keep us posted!
Cody and Family
Cody is our 7 year old Australian Heeler mix boy. Diagnosed on 2/20/14 and became a tripawd 2/21/14! We chose a homeopathic approach and he is being treated by Dr. Loops our of NC.
Oh cool I'm glad you updated here. I just saw your blog post from last night and was wondering how your night went.
Sounds pretty normal, really. If she doesn't urinate within the day I would let your vet know, sometimes recovering Tripawds need a little help with that. Again, totally normal and nothing to worry about.
Paws crossed for a great day ahead!

Our story: Broke rear leg in June 2013 - non-conclusive results for cancer so leg was plated and pinned. Enlarged spleen in September 2013 and had it removed and was diagnosed with Hemangiosarcoma and started chemotherapy. Became a Tripawd January 8th, 2014 and definitive Hemangiosarcoma diagnosis. Three major surgeries in 7 months and Shelby took them all like a champ only to lose her battle to cancer in her brain. We had 8 amazing extra months together and no regrets. #shelbystrong #loveofmylife
Yeah, ditto everyone else!
I KNOW this is sooooo hard to watch...breaks your heart!! Vut the sparkle WILL come back!!
The not standing is probably very mich related to the drugs. That's good that she's earng...most dogs don't have an appetite for several days. Let us know when she has first poop and first pee! We celebrate anything arond here!!
If the sling doesn't help..any many dogs refuse to budge with a "sling" anywah...you might ask the vet about backng off of the meds some. Although, I'd rather see them over-medicated than i pain!
Keep us posted... a when she naps and know you'llprobavly be up a few ore nights!!
Hugs to all!

Hi,
I'm glad Abbee is finally getting some rest- remember that you need to rest when you can!
I saw in another thread that Abbee was on a half of a 50 mg Tramadol 2 or 3 times a day. How much does she weigh? Maggie the Tri-pug was about 17 lbs at the time of her amp and she was on a quarter of a 50 mg tram 2 or 3 times a day. My quad pug Obie weighs about 16 lbs and was on the same tram dose after his knee surgery. Both pugs did have fentanyl patches after their surgeries.
Maggie was very agitated on tram, she would sleep about 30 min, then be up for hours and freaked out. You could tell she was seeing things. On the other hand my other two pugs have taken tram without any issues.
Got to run to a meeting, I'll check back later.
Karen
Tri-pug Maggie survived a 4.5 year mast cell cancer battle only to be lost to oral melanoma.
